I’m an adult. I have learned things from reading BISH.

Just because it’s accessible and reliable; it doesn’t matter that it’s not aimed at me.

I haven’t, ever, learned anything from reading AI except what the mostly likely next word in the sentence is.

Eg Since CGPT (and enshittification of Google search) visits to BISH have been down. Page rank is lower so BISH is getting served less. So it's out to destroy advice websites (that are free and ad free). But there's another issue and that is:

I have many worries about AI and 'advice' giving, but two pressing ones are how much useful information from advice columns, books, charities etc has been consumed and ruined to churn out harmful crap.

And how clearly advice giving has never been valued and continues to be devalued. Destroyed, even

If BISH isn't served in web searches, or if people use CGPT because they're told it's better, it may as well not exist. Sex ed gets deplatformed on social media. Schools are afraid to promote it. Only a small fragment of you share any of my resources because you're worried about what people think.

Interesting piece. But it's not just about channels, it's about a larger crisis in government comms - and in society - which is not a new thing and goes back perhaps 15 years. Put simply, the Whitehall comms machine has lost the ability to win arguments.

Each article takes between 0.5 - 3 days to write, illustrate, edit, publish and promote. There are hundreds of articles. It's all done by one guy who is well trained and has been doing this work since 1999.

I'm using the huge bank of resources at BISH as a resource. 'You may need to think about this' etc because RSE education is so bad. People come to BISH with a singular problem, but often leave with an education.

That visitors to BISH or any other site, receive advice from a human who also has other advice, guidance and education on offer. Look at my latest advice article where I say: in your case it is a fetish, but for other people it might be IPV, trust is gained by consent, here's how to use condoms etc

Don't know how many times I need to say it but advice giving and harm prevention are important, specialist skills. All of us can learn them, but automating 'help' via the massive environment-destroying plagiarism generator is not the answer and remains a danger.

We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.
