My latest piece for @jsource.bsky.social, Beyond the Famine Frame, pulls back the curtain on how editorial decisions, political pressure, and industry gatekeeping have eroded trust — and why the famine narrative isn't the shift in coverage some think it is.
The war on Gaza has exposed a breaking point between young people in Canada and traditional media, writes @imankassam.bsky.social

Most that applied for funds have been approved. But Indigenous-led online publication, @indiginews.bsky.social was denied.

The reality is, most of our audience is on the other website. But given its ownership and the fascism and such, we cannot continue to utilize it in good conscience.

I’d be grateful if you’d support @jsource.bsky.social by following us where we’ll be from now on:

Come work with me! We're looking for a newsletter writer who can help our reporting sing and our commentary, um, also sing?

This job involves developing the voice of the publication and working across beats, and has a ton of space to grow.

CPFP is continuing to speak with media workers who have been targeted by HonestReporting Canada.

Journalists have received hundreds of messages after being named in these campaigns, including one student journalist who received 1,500 emails in a single day.
Journalists targeted by these campaigns tell CPFP that HRC is weaponizing antisemitism to shut down reporting critical of Israel, and in the process provoking torrents of online harassment.
The organization says it aims to “control the narrative” by monitoring media and mobilizing complaints about reporting it sees as anti-Israel.
This number only includes posts which name individual media workers or newsrooms and which also include a means to contact them.
Media workers and newsrooms reporting on Israel and Palestine are being flooded with messages after being named in HonestReporting Canada pressure campaigns. Since Oct. 2023, HRC has relentlessly targeted the media, posting about twice a day — nearly 700 alerts total.
From the Canada Press Freedom Project:

HonestReporting Canada has targeted at least 384 individual media workers with almost 700 publications since October 2023.

CPFP is tracking these incidents as “chilling statements” in our database of press freedom infringements:
