For the late/west coast crowd, my latest for @cba-nationalmag.bsky.social on Quebec's proposed provincial constitution, and why there are concerns about its legitimacy if it wasn't arrived at by consultation or popular referendum #cdnlaw #cdnpoli
A constitution without consultation
Observers say Quebec’s proposed constitution requires more than an act of the legislature to have legitimacy

Trudeau is still living rent-free in the brains of the National Post's brass, clearly.

The most egregious part of this whole sad affair was that the PMO comms people were emailing us links to his twitter posts all weekend, as if carefully curated posts could somehow replace journalism.

Statement from the president of the Parliamentary Press Gallery:
Statement from the president of the Parliamentary Press Gallery, on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s trip to Egypt

The Parliamentary Press Gallery was not informed in advance of the Prime Minister’s trip to Egypt to participate in the Middle East Peace Ceremony on Oct. 12 - 13.

The Gallery is disappointed and dismayed at the exclusion of Canadian media from the event and expresses in no uncertain terms that this must never happen again.

It is unprecedented that Canadian media be entirely excluded from a Canadian prime minister’s foreign trip.

Our members bring trustworthy and reliable news coverage free from any political interference to Canadians every day and play a critical role in holding government's accountable to the people that elect them.

Every government, in a healthy democracy, must show a commitment to freedom of the press. In Canada, that includes respect for the vital role the Gallery and its members play. Any event that erodes access, transparency and accountability is a step in the wrong direction.

Also, because it extends into the set corridor.

I just can't.
And he's going to be premier forever because Ontarians eat this shit up, apparently.

While constitutions are supposed to protect minority rights against majority rule, McGill's Johanne Poirier says Quebec’s proposal pushes the balance toward the elected majority of the National Assembly. @journodale.bsky.social has that story. www.nationalmagazine.ca/en-ca/articl...

RCMP training is six months. CBSA officer training is 14 weeks. It will take time and budget allocations to scale both up to hire a thousand officers each.
But tell me again that it's a failure and a broken promise that it didn't happen over the summer.
Can everybody just grow the fuck up already?

Prime Minister Carney’s Public Safety minister is responsible for the Canadian Border.

He promised to hire 1,000 new border guards, but hasn’t gotten it done, so illegal weapons and drugs keep flooding into our country.

Fire Gary Anandasangaree and bring in strong laws that stop crime and secure our border:

Not to mention those, including in the National Post, who deliberately misread judgements for their own particular ends.

Oh, for sure.
But this particular crew of misfit toys who wrote this op-ed deserved to be laughed out of any room they're in.
journodale.bsky.social
Considering it's the NP's usual cast of misfit toys writing the op-ed, any of their claims need to be taken with a shaker of salt.

I still tend to be skeptical of complaints about judicial activism, but putting that aside, I'd like to see some evidence that pubic trust in the courts has been damaged.

For the evening crowd, my Loonie Politics column on how we've allowed scapegoating to take hold of the immigration discourse rather than hold the premiers in particular to account for their failures. #cdnpoli
The immigration discourse has taken a toxic turn - Loonie Politics
Everyone has allowed this toxic discourse to flourish at a time when the far-right is moving mainstream, and this is a very real problem.
