Oh yeah, I have a new book out! A goofy horror comedy/ homage to campy horror movies, right on time for Halloween season! 🎃

Recently in a critique group for something I wrote months ago a guy called out a line he really liked and I was like “wow, I wrote that?” 🤣

One of my favorite under-appreciated styles of #writing are “vibe stories”, stories that evoke a certain feeling without having to strictly deliver on plot. Usually done through setting / atmosphere, & characterization. The plot is there but it’s usually in the background. Stories like ambient music

Rain really is the best for writing!😌

Although I love distant thunder it terrifies my dogs so I’ll usually be too busy comforting them to write when it’s thundering 😆

Just thought it’d share this here since the Bluesky writing community has been so awesome. Take of it what you will, I’m not trying to start anything, I just wanted to share something awesome that’s worked for me & I love.

Happy writing Bluesky!

I called it #75Creative inspired by the fitness challenge of a similar name, but I think that “Creative Flywheel” is a better name since that’s what it’s been for me. A flywheel that I don’t want to stop because I’ve loved it so much. The initial goal was 75 days but I’m going to keep on going.

In the past 75 days I’ve been on quite the creative adventure & have grown a lot. I recommend trying something like this yourself if you’re looking for a fun little challenge.

Maybe you need the boost to finish your WIP, or maybe you want to grow your community, or maybe something else.

Some arbitrary but significant goals I achieved during it:
- Finished editing & published the book I wrote last year!
- Wrote over 50k words towards my WIP
- Rebooted my newsletter
- Attended more in person writing & reading events
- Got over my cold feet with social media
- Read so many books!

I leaned so much in this journey. From learning that I have more time & energy to write than I thought, to realizing just how much I want to help & contribute to the writing & reading communities as a whole. I feel like maintaining these habits has give me way more confidence as a creative.

Cont.
- Doing something for authors each day (can be posting here, or writing a book review, or just emailing them telling them I enjoyed their book, etc)
- Doing something do readers each day (can be a rando story on IG, a book rec, snippets of my WIP, book promos, etc)

Yesterday I completed one of my favorite self imposed #writing challenges I’ve ever done. It consisted of 75 days of:
- 1.5 hrs of creative work each day (1/2 must be toward my WIP, the other 1/2 can be whatever)
- Reading a few pages from craft book each day
- Reading fiction for 30 min / day

Good morning #authors, what are we working on this week?

I just wrapped up a big beat in my story so I’m planning the next beat / sequence & writing it this week.

So happy to have crossed it! Somedays I can’t believe how big this book is 😆

This weekend I hit 100k words making this officially the biggest book I’ve ever worked on, and there’s still plenty more to go! Estimated 40k to 80k words left, which seems daunting but I’ve already written more than half the book, so I know it’s doable!

Same, I’ve gotten “used” to it but “used” is a relative term. Hard to turn off the inner perfectionist fully

Sounds like a great trip! Plus the rest & scenery and people you got to experience it with could be great inspiration.

I know that feeling well enough! 😆

#PlotTober My MC has been so beaten down by so many external demands & has felt led astray by false promises in her career & marriage. She’s too risk averse to leave & believes that the world exists only to use people. The culmination of these beliefs is the entire reason why she’s on the expedition

Answer the prompt on the card by quoting this post. Remember, answering a prompt is always optional. Even if you don't share it publicly, I hope the prompt encourages you to think about it privately.

8. What are some potential reasons the main character(s) haven't, couldn't, and/or can't pursue these goals yet? Consider other characters, backstory events, circumstances, environmental factors, etc.

Remember: Use the #PlotTober hashtag, engage with others, and have fun!

That’s a great way to describe pantsing! You’re just the muse for the characters while they do whatever the heck the want to do 😄

Such is the life of a pantser, sometimes you wanna go somewhere but the story demands you do something else 😄

Tbh most of this book so far is pretty much “depressed woman just exists on the sidelines while things happen around her & she uses those things to reflect on her life” but in the Forest of Plot she’s actually doing things! 😆
