A new episode of Through the Square Window is now available wherever you get your podcasts. Hosted by @samiraahmeduk.bsky.social and @gkw.bsky.social, it's looking at four shows from October 1990: The Mary Whitehouse Experience, Watchdog, Knightmare and Twin Peaks

October 13, 1978: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back: #OTD Triple-I created this DIGITAL X-wing fighter, constructed from 60k polygons by Art Durinski, for @ILMVFX to make “Star Wars 2,” but it was too expensive. See Triple I’s test footage here: youtu.be/i8zjMQz5Ftg

ST:TNG - 'The High Ground'

Oh christ - TNG does Northern Ireland and is in no way subtle about it either. This is the one the 2024 meme came from. Bev is kidnapped, but comes to understand the terrorist behind it is a sensitive soul, an artist. I cheered when Picard decked him.
"Hold on, I'll get you a paracetemol" "yes, I murder school children, but I'm actually very sensitive"
"Oh no, my female feelings are all confused" Gun battles in Engineering, this is what the kids want! YEAH!

ST:TNG - 'The Hunted'

Federation wannabes create super soldiers and then exile them. One gets loose and causes havoc on the Enterprise. Sort of 'Space Seed 2' mixed with 'Rambo'. Super soldier powers expressed via massive hair. Oh, and it's the 90s now.
"Shall I shave his massive hair now, sir?" Is this... is this the Death Star? "But he's a nice man - yes he killed hundreds - but he's a really nice man, with really massive hair!" Picard here, terrified some damage might come to the ornamental pond and plant display.

ST:TNG - 'The Defector'

After 2.5 seasons of TNG the Romulan conflict finally hots up - sort of. An episode that keeps you guessing, the resolution is lots of fun. Not Yet G'Kar turns up again.
"Bit of a rash, have you changed your washing powder recently?" "Fuck." "But, Geordi, is he a defector?"
"See this tiny speck of dust, Data? That's how much I give a shit" Lots of good spaceship stuff in this one. Must have been sweeps week.

ST:TNG - 'The Vengeance Factor'

Space pirates! Mullets! Revenge! Presumably the 'vengeance factor' in question was the name of the anti-aging face cream worn by Yuta. Who, of course, Riker tries to knob.
"Please feed me your food and then allow me to feed you my dick" If Worf were in charge, episodes would be a lot shorter and a lot bloodier "Ooh Betty!" One of the fun games to play in season 3 is to drink every time you see these triangular scaffold struts - used by every base and human colony in the 24th century.

Fallen behind with these, hold on...

ST:TNG - 'The Price'

Aerobixs, sleazeballs and wormholes. Deanna gets seduced, Data and Geordi visit the Delta Quadrant long before Janeway and co, the Ferengi do Ferengi shit. Contains the world's worst seduction scene.
Star Trek trying to be sexy is never sexy Guinan's controversial 'no hand stamp, no re-entry' policy This moment has to be seen to be believed. Amazingly, Riker does not punch him, though he should.

And here, also, for the first time, is an extended 300-track playlist running chronologically through the 1980s, from 1980 to 1989. This doesn't even cover half of what's in the book, but I think it's a really effective soundtrack. #IntoTheGroove www.tunemymusic.com/share/kQHEUO...

Very much enjoyed this approach to looking at place, ecology, identity and The Mysterious Planet. Is Drathro like Trigger’s Broom? The answer may surprise you!

Boris Johnson, "I tried to get the scientists to say that lockdown was a bad idea"

*they all laugh*

There were 26,000 covid deaths because Boris Johnson ignored scientists and delayed the first lockdown by a week

(went down a rabbit hole with this) looks like the archives for Yorkshire and Granada - plus others ended up at ITV PLC, while Thames is owned by Freemantle. Can only assume it's what's in their catalogues available for the right price.

A fantastic concept trailer for a #StarTrek #DoctorWho crossover.

The original was lost, so this is a second pass, and it's really bloody good.

Happy birthday to this marvellous record, an LP that so impressed the drummer from Pimlico that, following a few drinks, he approached Bob Stanley at (I think) The Underworld in Camden and told him how much he loved it-except in his cups he called it Fox Box Belfry. Which we've called it ever since-
