“Everything in moderation. Its such an appealing idea. It might be true for ice cream, bourbon & staying up til 3am. But what if juvenile prison isn’t like those things? Some things- heroin or Russian roulette- are dangerous even in moderation. Maybe prison is too.”

October 16, 1973- Noted unicameralist Sen. John Knuppel took a bold stand against co-sponsoring congratulatory resolutions.
GENERAL SESSION of the 78th GENERAL ASSEMBLY October 16, 1973
SENATOR KNUPPEL:
On the motion before this, I think it was said that I was a sponsor and I would like to have that for record corrected. I don't think it was me. I have never been the sponsor of a congratulatory message in this Session and I have not joined in any of these except when they affected members of the Senate or their families.

October 15, 1973: Gov. Dan Walker addressed a joint session of the Illinois General Assembly and called for action on reforming the governance and funding of mass transit in Northeastern Illinois.

Governor Walker: I will reserve comment today on the details
of a Regional Transportation Authority. The question of public transportation in Northern Illinois, as everybody in this Legislature knows, has plagued Legislatures and Governors for years. The need, I suggest, is clear. Public transportation cannot survive on the fare box alone. The state must act, as surely as we do not; emergency funding will have to be provided to meet the inevitable crisis that will occur. :

October 14, 1971: As Sen. Robert Egan presented a bill, he noted it had been subject to a deal of misinformation, recalling an old professor's remark that, "The trouble in the world is not what people don't know, it's what they do know that just ain't so."
TRANSCRIPT 77TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY
OCTOBER 1971 SESSION
OCTOBER 14, 1971

SENATOR EGAN:

Mr. President and welcome members of the Senate. I am sure you are all familiar with senate bill 64. It has been called the barber bill. When I think of the discussion and misinformation that has been generated by this piece of legislation, I think of my old college English Professor who used to say many times that "The trouble in the world is not what people don't know, it's what they do know that just ain't so."

By me this week - the happiest thing I've got to report of late, with a glorious trip over the summer to Montreal

You'll forgive me for thinking a midcentury nepobaby and a guy who got a sweetheart non-prosecution deal for an off-the-books "loan" while serving as a Cabinet secretary are perhaps not the people we want designing our political structures.

My kingdom for a bipartisan group of septuagenarian Illinois politicians nursing decades-long grievances against Pat Quinn who will pool their resources to repeal the Cutback Amendment.

A bipartisan pair of former high-level officials from President Barack Obama’s administration on Tuesday began their public push to stop state lawmakers from directly drawing their own district boundaries, a change they argue would mean a General Assembly that better represents voters.

“Fair Maps Illinois” marks the third attempt since 2014 to reduce heavy partisan influence in how Illinois district boundaries are drawn following the once-per-decade census.

After a summer-long evaluation, I regret to report that ilga.gov sucks now.

Things that would be useful:
1) Audio/video archive
2) Hyperlinked ILCS crossreferences
3) Committee/tracked bill notifications

Things that aren't useful:
1) Clicking multiple times for things instead of a single click.

I do still appreciate the course at DePaul where you learn about the history of a neighborhood and do service work with a local org. It taught me how to learn about the city.
