So do men hit an age where they just say F'it to everything? Because in women it seems like their mid 40s, then We Do Not Care.

Except the whole authoritarian fascist thing, we care about that.

I’ve been saying this for years.

Something positive about facing the current crisis of democracy?

We can rebuild better.
We can learn from this attack on democracy and move forward.
The important thing is that we can rebuild something fully new and better, which is why facing the severity of this moment can be a source of hope rather than paralysis.

And this study wasn’t funded. Students were funded on other projects and I used some internal funds to cover sequencing. Sometimes you can’t wait for a proposal to get accepted to do the science that needs to get done.
And thanks to all of the students I insisted Malique take out as field buddies for his monthly sampling.
And moreover, this is a great result of our students Felix and Malique getting together and combining their expertises. And our summer intern Porscha who cranked out a ton of QPCR.
My colleague Andrew introduced me to EEMS, which is a spectroscopy technique that examines bio vs geo influenced changes in carbon. Was neat to apply to pore water and watch changes in biological indexes across the year.
I once again find out my paper is available through your social media feed 🤣. I think this is my 3rd time 😊.

Remember the Year of the MOOC from a decade ago? The one where tech bros predicted the end of all but 3-4 universities because who needs campuses when everyone can just take MOOCs and learn everything? Hits a little different now after pandemic pedagogy, huh? The tech hype cycle is a helluva drug.

Oh man, can’t believe I almost missed world hagfish day! Having harvested perhaps more hagfish slime in a year than any other individual to investigate how effective their slime could be at stopping small boat propellers at high speeds for the Navy, I can attest their their slime is really unique!

Today, Treasury Sec. Bessent floated a $40B Argentina bailout.

But, the White House's FY26 budget includes $18B in cuts to NIH, $5B cuts to each of NSF, NSF, EPA and CDC ($20B more) and $1.7B in cuts to NOAA, also a total of ~$40B.

Seems like the executive branch has a different set of priorities.

I just watched a video where I talked about my hopes for my future lab and for science, and the thing that really occurred to me is how much the uncertainty and the attacks in the current moment have tampered my enthusiasm. Those of us who still want to be the change in science are tired.

Hello everyone, take a look at my cool bugs from the Microbial Dark Matter phylum Saccharibacteria! These ultrasmall bacteria (in green) track down Actinobacteria hosts (not in green) and grow on the host cell envelope.
For the first time, scientists have performed targeted mutations on an episymbiosis-determining pathway. In a new study on Saccharibacteria, AFI researchers used advanced techniques to observe pili that drive motility and host attachment.
