English peas for eating -- usually shelled and eaten raw in the garden as a snack!
I rented my own Mission apt for $400 in 1991 - $951 today, adj for inflation. Housing scarcity drives up rents.

Enter the transit fiscal cliff.

via @benschneider.bsky.social
Why are so many transit agencies facing ‘fiscal cliffs’?
Covid and inflation played a role. But for many agencies, the crisis goes much deeper.

Because these are the End Times, my "Cuprani" and "April in Paris" are in full bloom not in April but October. I'll be planting English pea seeds, but yes there's always room for next spring's sweet peas

As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

See this for what it is:
*Trump wants to make the military/FBI loyal to him
*GOP refuses bipartisan legislation to pay the military
*Trump creates a new executive power: that he and he alone decides if the military/FBI is paid during shutdown

donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-shutdo...
This bothers me, and I think it should bother you. At a time when the President is politicizing the military, it strikes me as a deeply troubling development that their paychecks depend upon his willingness to dig into the treasury, as opposed to it being a bipartisan matter of law. Such a dependence is exactly the opposite of what we want to see in a regime built around the logic of personalist loyalty.

The purpose of traffic citations is deterrence. A $50 fine is devastating for someone struggling to pay rent, but a minor annoyance to a millionaire. For fines to be effective in advancing safety, states should legalize deterrence-based fines. Net revenue should go to prevention.
In #Switzerland, fine for a speeding driver is based (1) on how far over the limit the driver is going
(2) on how much the driver earns.

One man caught driving his Ferrari at 137 km/h the in an 80 km/h zone in a village near St. Gallen was fined 300,000 Swiss Francs (today, $375,000 US).

Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year
We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

To deliver Montreal's best pedestrianized streets and protected bikeways, the borough mayor in Plateau-Mont-Royal knew to lead with art, community, kids, landscape and beauty. He coordinated department staffs, provided political cover, and created quick results. Still, I'm terrified of this approach
To learn how to accelerate safety, climate and equity solutions in American cities, don't go to Europe - go to Montreal (or Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton...). This video explains Montreal's unique political structure that has created extraordinary policymaker leadership for change
This video is a long time coming.

People always ask me: what makes Montreal so ambitious on urbanism? (At least for bikes and pedestrians.)

I've been thinking through this and asking Montrealers, and in this video I want to cover *part* of the answer.

Reminder: Calif's landmark enviro legislation, CEQA, was designed not to advance the environment, but protect status quo. Every project, incl critical projects for climate, can be delayed for years by single cranky person. We need regs that accelerate climate, equity, safety, ag and other solutions.
