I'm sorry, is the Trump Administration talking to a tech platform?

Is it...requesting content moderation?
Today following outreach from @thejusticedept, Facebook removed a large group page that was being used to dox and target @ICEgov agents in Chicago.
The wave of violence against ICE has been driven by online apps and social media campaigns designed to put ICE officers at risk just for doing their jobs. The Department of Justice will continue engaging tech companies to eliminate platforms where radicals can incite imminent violence against federal law enforcement.

Of course, it also shows up how little hope many young people have for the more conventional paths to success enjoyed by previous generations. If the whole economy is a casino, what choice is there but to play?
jddunn.bsky.social
Literally advising people to take on $9k in non-dischargeable debt, go directly to the casino, bet it all on black, and let it ride 5 or 6x. Yeah, some tiny percentage of people will in fact win that insane bet, but this is no way to run an economy. The House always wins, and you're not Special.

Which, WRT the first option, how would you even find a therapist who won't conclude that going on and on about how Total Information Collapse and the End of All Consensus Reality is ruining my career, my identity, and my country is part of the patient's psychosis?
jddunn.bsky.social
Yeah, probably a sign that I should seek some help sooner or later, but that's my intrusive thought too. I figured climate change + capitalism would make the last couple of decades of my life dicey, but I had no idea that we'd spontaneously implode before the big effects even properly got started.

IMLS’s new team decided that nearly all of the $14.1 million allocated to the Nat'l Leadership Grants for Libraries(in 2025) is going to 1 recipient, the U.S. Semiquincentennial Co.

So instead of our taxes going to support our libraries, we're paying for a UFC fight on the white house lawn.

It's October 2025 and the federal government is shut down.

So what's currently going on at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)? Well, a lot of money seems to be "missing," among other things.

The Current State of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (October 2025 Edition)
Grant money that should be going to library projects is going to state-sponsored propaganda, among other IMLS updates.

Took a break from the Supreme Court's ongoing horrorshow to focus on what really matters: how funny it is for a federal judge to decide, as a matter of law, that Drake lost the Kendrick Lamar beef
Federal Judge Declares Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” Too Awesome to Be Defamatory
Apparently, Drake decided that losing in the court of public opinion was not humiliating enough.

Once you see that, and what happened in the BLM protests, you have a very hard time seeing how Dem electeds can control the police. That should have been a huge warning sign to get back civilian control ASAP in this political environment, but they decided to hug them & give them more money instead.

Well, and what happened during the pandemic really laid this bare. You've got the most publicly visible agents of the state openly refusing to follow the policies of the duly elected government of the state, re: masking and vaccination in the middle of a pandemic and associated societal crisis.

people who want other people to stay in sad little grey boxes forever and never be happy in their bodies or desires are villains and cowards and they may be winning right now but by god they will lose as water smooths stone and roots break it, because that fierce joy is roots and water and life

Good to see that the Left has finally taken steps to address the Frog Gap.

Also like, a big press release that then just handwaves at AI and is like "we'll figure out what this is and what we're calling it later"? 🧐
jddunn.bsky.social
Biggest and saddest reveal in all of this is how much of the population (and even the portions with an elite education) seems to openly loathe literacy.

What if we had another Civil War, but this time over imaginary things?

And if this is the beginning of a trend, it amounts to collective punishment of a population for harboring dissidents / not getting with the program / having voted against the autocrat / pick what you like. They don't have the manpower to do it at scale yet, but it's a signal of intent.

all discourse aside, there is one machine with consciousness. it's printers. they are alive and conscious and they hate you and they'd take your arm clean off if you let them. never trust a printer.

The Trump administration’s tariff regime and the elimination of fee exemptions for items under $800 is limiting resource sharing between university libraries, trapping some books in foreign countries, and reversing long-held standards in academic cooperation.

Libraries Can’t Get Their Loaned Books Back Because of Trump’s Tariffs
Libraries have shared their collections internationally for decades. Trump’s tariffs are throwing that system into chaos and can ‘hinder academic progress.’

Reminds me a bit too much of the gun people, in terms of "you can't talk about the societal effects of this technology and possible remedies for them unless you know all the gun nerd lingo and specs first". At least the AI people don't have a constitutional amendment they can point to. Yet.

my hot take is that torrenting is preservation
noethematt.bsky.social
I maintain that if the profession is going to allow genAI, we have to be okay with torrenting of media too.
