This exactly how fascism always works. They make you feel threatened. They tell you the solution is to stop caring about a particular group of people. They strip those people of their rights. They manufacture another crisis to make you feel threatened. Rinse & repeat. In the end they come for you.

A friend who studied at Oxford (a few years ago, admittedly!) told me debate club had a rule: if you compared anyone to Hitler, you forfeited the debate. This attitude persists in elite circles even now, when actual Fascists are quoting Carl Schmitt, persecuting minorities & doing Nazi salutes.

Catholics were social justice warriors for centuries before it was disparaged as "woke". The Church preaches compassion & love for neighbours, strangers & adversaries, & will keep on doing so even when fascists are telling people "empathy is a mental illness" & "immigrants don't have human rights."

We can keep doing this forever, or fix public health policy. Hospitals are unsafe for workers & patients. We need suitable PPE & clean air standards to stop the spread of airborne infectious diseases. It is a political choice to govern without fairness or compassion.

We could keep doing this forever, or we could make hospitals safe for workers & patients by mandating clean air standards & providing effective masks to protect against airborne viruses. It's illegal & irresponsible to violate workers rights & ignore patient safety.

The struggle over regime change is about whether the aspiring authoritarians can subdue civil society. Their strategy is to play divide and conquer, rewarding friends and brutally punishing opponents. They win when society cracks, creating a self-enforcing set of expectations.

Power is a “coordination game,” in which everything depends on what the public believes and does together. Even the most brutal tyrant does not have enough soldiers and police to compel everyone to obey at gunpoint. Authoritarian regimes need civil society to acquiesce to their rule.
