I get this a lot, and I'll venture a slightly less damning explanation. Lot of people think someone who gets shot could avoid it. "I would have simply explained to Officer Negligent Discharge that I was cool," etc. When they see a cop shoot a toy breed dog, they understand he's just a sociopath.

Because Americans care more about shooting dogs than shooting innocent poor people or minorities.

I’ve been asked about Joe Arpaio and last decade’s “show me your papers” laws in a few interviews recently.

The current regime feels even worse because showing ICE your papers is not enough if you look Latino.

Officers just refuse to believe the papers are real.

Kind of amazing that the photo Politico used of one of these folks -- the one who made a joke about gas chambers -- is from an event that Politico sponsored last summer.

Cato filed an amicus brief in RAICES v. Noem, the case challenging Trump's Border Dictator order that purports to suspend all immigration law because it is "ineffective." Our brief describes how the government's arguments are baseless www.cato.org/legal-briefs...
RAICES v. Noem
The government’s assertions are based on either misinterpretations or tortured readings of the data, attempting to find justification for a spurious legal argument in facts that simply are not there.

They don’t say.

The County gave them 12 reasons not to take it. We didn’t think any were very convincing. But Gorsuch just mentioned the “vehicle problems.”

Could be because it’s weed-related. Could be because we won every other issue below. Could be there just aren’t four who like this issue.

What happened to Maria Greeley is the inevitable result of the admin’s enforcement policies.

ICE is stopping people based on their ethnicity + occupation, and then assuming their IDs must be fake.

They did the same thing to our client Leo Garcia Venegas in Alabama.

Our case against Humboldt is one of the relists.

The county fines people millions for unpermitted greenhouses and garages on the assumption there’s weed inside.

Instead of a jury, the facts are decided by a private law firm that’s never ruled against the county.

When we sued to stop the ICE raids in Alabama, DHS said it can make immigration arrests based on reasonable suspicion.

We figured McLaughlin just misspoke.

But here’s the Chief Border Agent clarifying that they don’t think they need probable cause.

enforcement crackdown in Chicago denied that racial profiling factors into arrests made by federal officers.

If anyone knows any victims of this raid, we’d like to talk to them.

Our legal services are all completely free.

We’ve got two other cases over ICE raids already. And we just won a Supreme Court case over the FBI raiding the wrong house.

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

This is why our lawsuit refers to it as a demographic profile.

And it’s part of how the admin found traction with Kavanaugh.

ICE is targeting people based on ethnicity + occupation.

Their position is that brown people with certain jobs are inherently suspect and subject to countless stops.

There is a class component to federal agents' crackdowns. They're abducting day laborers, street vendors, domestic workers, textile workers en masse. They're not going after big employers/people in Trump's corporate milieu.

Would also love for him to explain when damages are “appropriate” for constitutional violations.

His camp is suddenly eager to say damages remedies “should be” available after they made sure that none are.

I spoke to a Venezuelan woman who was arrested in this raid and later released with her 4yo son. She said agents broke down their door, pointed guns at them and made sexualized remarks about Venezuelan women. When she returned to her apartment it was boarded up and all her possessions were gone.

DHS just lies constantly but this time they let the truth slip. DHS will arrest you if you are Hispanic PLUS literally any other thing that they think is correlated statistically with being here illegally; occupation, English speaking ability, the neighborhood, etc. It is sick.
