Ugh, hadn’t thought about this!!

Not going to argue with you there. Things are bad. Sorry to hear about your situation — your university should absolutely be raising your pay to at least keep up with inflation.

What if it not only mattered where and how often you were publishing but also where and how often you were reviewing?? And the quality of those reviews (we rate them all, anyway). The invisible labor done to keep the field afloat should be rewarded by the institutions that contribute to the field.

Also just want to add here that this is not a critique of academics, necessarily. The system is fundamentally and irrevocably broken, and if nothing else, this is evidence that a radical restructuring of the peer review system — or, if nothing else, incentives for T&P — is necessary.

I used to feel bad when I would decline peer review requests, but after serving as an AE for less than a month, I am learning that most people simply don’t respond to the review requests. Any response at all feels like a win these days.

Every time you delete a reply to a post that will obviously start a debate with willfully ignorant people in the comments, an angel gets its wings 🪽

This will not help me win this game

Increasingly difficult with each passing day!

Not hard with the people we spend time with, most of whom are academics or work in public health or climate. Family, for sure, though!

This would bankrupt my husband, I fear 😅

Every time I go out with my friends, we play everyone’s favorite game: “how long can we go without talking about the rise of fascism in the United States?” Someone usually loses quickly, and we spend the rest of the evening in a state of despair.

NEW: @CDCgov hit hard by massive firings that several staff describe to me as a “bloodbath.”
Among those RIFd:
—leadership of the center for immunization and respiratory diseases;
—leadership of global health center
—leadership of the measles outbreak response; 1/4

I think it’s time to get my millennial self off TikTok. I just watched a video of someone asking for photos of a happy couple, and all the photos were from PROM 😭

We got to see San Francisco’s drag laureate tonight. Worth every penny (and every $1 bill) 💸

Ahh yes, that important part of the scientific method where you "make the proof"

I KNOW IT’S NICE TO TRAVEL IN THE MIDDLE OF JULY!! That’s why I got married then 🥲

Downside of getting married in the summer is that every conference I want to go to is the weekend of my anniversary

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

*looking for homes to buy in the LA area*

Me: “Oh, look. That one is only 1.25 million. That’s the most reasonable one I’ve seen.”

*reading the description*

Me: “The home is not presently habitable and there are health and safety concerns.”
