Hiya, I'm Ivy and I work in conservation and research of threatened marine wildlife in Central America. Lately I've been focusing on deepwater fisheries and sharks.

Goats are so stupid that it's pointless to try to outsmart them, you have to out dumb them. Do the thing that would put them in mortal danger and they will run toward it.

Oh boy, more lead!

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

i feel like this story is particularly important right now, because protein-maxxing is *so* in vogue. before working on this, i believed i was woefully protein deficient

it turns out that's just a myth that has been floating around for decades—the average american gets more than enough protein!!

Can folks in the know please share good local community groups for donations/ support for people impacted by the floods in Alaska? I'd love to donate and signal boost.

I've been trialing brave and waterfox, and I like waterfox a lot better. Brave has trouble toggling between more than one google account (if you need that) and is a RAM hog when you have several tabs open. It also does ai summaries. Waterfox seems to use fewer resources and manages cookies well.

if we are going to have a supreme court that is as powerful as it is, i basically think justices should be forbidden from public comment on their work as well as any supplemental source of income while they are on the bench. (they should also ride circuit again but that's a bit separate.)

The substance of what she's saying is bad and unconvincing, but more fundamentally, I really don't think Supreme Court justices should be going on book tours where they publicly comment on their work and respond to criticism of it. Either put it in a written opinion or hold your peace.

Amy Coney Barrett defends heavy use of the shadow docket: "If we wrote a long opinion, it might give the impression that we have finally resolved the issue, and in none of these cases have we finally resolved the issue."

niche #rstats tweet: does anyone have a nice snippet of code they would share to download, import, and reshape GLORYS12 ocean data?
ivalina.bsky.social
Oh, I hadn't read about using it to add weight! I've considered pulverizing the sticks rather than buying the powder, but the local brands where I live have even less regulation, so I'm not very confident that they're much better.
ivalina.bsky.social
The cinnamon thing is extra scary because it's so common in things you make for kids. I don't think there's any way to know if a brand is safe since the contamination likely takes place at the place of harvest from dust from machinery and roads.
deborahb.bsky.social
Yet another FDA alert on lead in cinnamon was issued yesterday. This is the fifth update warning of risk in additional brands since the agency first flagged the problem in July 2024.
Safety Alert
The FDA is advising consumers to throw away and not to buy the ground cinnamon products because samples of products listed in the table were found to contain elevated levels of lead.

🚨PhD opportunity w/ @venditti.bsky.social and @watershedlab.bsky.social on sediment supply and transport in mountain watersheds in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. 🧪⚒️ Full ad: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/jo09s...
The River Dynamics Laboratory at Simon Fraser University, in collaboration with WaterSHED lab at the University of Calgary (https://ucalgary.ca/labs/waterSHED), seeks a PhD student to work on sediment supply in mountain drainage basins in the Rocky Mountains. The candidate would develop and validate a morphodynamic model of changes in river channels caused by coarse sediment delivery by landslides. The candidate will join a large group of students and postdocs at Simon Fraser University and the University of Calgary with expertise in river geomorphology and natural hazards.
The PhD candidate will:
1) Build a one-dimensional numerical model to predict channel evolution that is based on the Parker family of morphodynamic models
2) Collect topographic and sediment texture information to parametrize model in the field
3) Validate the model using channel profiles and newly acquired lidar
4) Experiment with the model to explore sediment removal and augmentation strategies
Minimum qualifications include:
1) A Masters degree in Geology, Engineering, Environmental Science, or Physical Geography
2) Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
3) Experience with hydraulic and/or morphodynamic modelling.
