It’s the 111th anniversary today of the birth of Harry Rée, who was a teacher and conscientious objector when the Second World War broke out, and by the time it ended, when he was 31, had invented ‘blackmail sabotage’ and got a DSO, an OBE, a Croix de Guerre, and a Medaille de la Resistance

Listen, I have no time for debates about pronouns in bios but while answering emails this morning I twice had to google names as to not misgender ppl and honestly, pronouns had helped me save time here.
Very annoying that everything is culture war now and pragmatic solutions not a thing.

I actually agree with you on this point. Which, in my opinion, makes this gif even more appropriate :)

I mean, who wouldn't be turned into a bit of an asshole by that?

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

as a girl with a PhD in natural language processing and machine learning it's actually offensive to me when you say "we don't know how LLMs work so they might be conscious"

I didn't spend 10 years in mines of academia to be told ignorance is morally equal knowledge.

We know exactly how LLMs work.
The officer holding his firearm with a side grip tells everything one needs to know about the training they receive.
Got my flu and covid jabs this morning, so it's once again time to post this.
It is what the modern right is all about: praise strength and masculinity, claim to be the true incarnation of warrior code. And then whine because the world around you is a horribly dangerous place and you are constantly scared of everything and everyone.
Ah, thank you for this. I am adding the missing titles to my "to read asap" list.

Some good news.

London is meeting legal limits for toxic NO2 pollution for the first time – almost 200 years earlier than predicted – following the Mayor’s "world leading air pollution policies," City Hall announces.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone - and similar policies - really do work.

That is unbelievable. It's almost like they elected a reality TV star, who then appointed a bunch of other TV people.

I can't get over how the right-wing doesn't understand modern militaries, with the majority serving non-combat roles. You think the best IT security & logistics personnel spends two hours in the gym every day to look like the cast of 300? They're at furry conventions and model train shows.

This is dumb on so many levels. But perhaps the stupidest aspect is the denial of climate change, which actually cripples our military readiness. From where to build bases, to where to expect conflict (esp. re potable water and mass migration), to our military's reliance on oil to function. Moronic.
Hegseth: "No more dudes in dresses. No more climate change worship ... we are done with that shit."
19yo me, a simple Italian Air Force cadet, would have found these words utterly ridiculous.
I can only try to imagine what generals and admirals must have thought.
Hegseth: "We unleash overwhelming and punishing violence on the enemy. We also don't fight with stupid rules of engagement. We untie the hands of our warfighters to intimidate, demoralize, hunt, and kill the enemies of our country. No more politically correct and overbearing rules of engagement."

The reason for military rules of engagement and adhering to laws of armed combat is not “political correctness,” it’s better strategy, serves long-term national interest, and is a way to make an awful part of the human experience a little less awful, based on lessons learned from centuries of blood.
