My Alma mater is in quasi receivership because maybe (unproven) somebody in an activist group protesting human rights abuses said/did something antisemitic.

They’ve used these (rare) incidents as the basis for dismantling my entire billion dollar industry.

During the protests on campuses last year I saw some videos of activists saying and doing antisemitic things, it’s true. College kids.

This is the Vice President of the United States and the richest man in the world throwing Nazi salutes and excusing holocaust jokes.

Wake up.
ianmhartshorn.com
The vice president says being upset about praise for Hitler is “pearl clutching”

I don’t understand fellow American Jews who excuse this and spend endless effort to end campus protests.

This movement is antisemitic to its core.

Fascinating. Politico notes that when notified of the texts, many state-level Republicans fired or condemned these cretins. Now Vance emerges to excuse the racism, and calls the reaction to it "pearl clutching."

He seems determined to purge the party of its last enclaves of decency.
‘College Group Chat’: JD Vance Dismisses ‘Pearl Clutching’ Over Young Republicans Leak to Attack Jay Jones
Liberals hit back at Vance's blunt dismissal of racist, antisemitic and misogynistic messages leaked from a Young Republicans group chat.

Enjoyed this essay and the one Dave posted yesterday. From my little corner of comparative political economy those webs of interdependent corporate loans look like another (even older) crisis: East Asian financials from the mid 1990s. That went great!

I am so proud of myself for peer-pressuring Ben into writing this follow-up piece.

Highly recommended.

Ok @davekarpf.bsky.social wins, I wrote about OpenAI and Enron again, with a nod to Lehman Brothers as well. The fire burns as AI bubbles.

It used to be on twitter 10k was the threshold for unhinged auto replies. I guess it’s 5k here?

I mean. Food does have too much mrup these days.

This morning it was a multi verse rendition of Velvet Underground’s “I’m waiting for the can” about waiting for your wet food in the morning.

My spouse is cool and listens to cool music and I don’t which means she thinks the songs I sing to our cat ones I wrote but it’s just like old Rolling Stones or Taylor Swift.

The “cries about bias but thinks cruelty to grad students is good” economist. The “weirdly horny for cartoons” economist. All of them.

Don’t share the bad dumb economists into my timeline challenge.

I think I’m on year 3 of my Cambridge royalty check being too low to be worth actually sending to me. They just hold it for the following year.

Just a reminder that most academics are not making oodles of money from their university press books. For some reason, people think I am making bank with my Illinois book. I am not rich by any means.

Some make money with trade press books, but that isn't all of us. Thank you.
Adieu!

We NEVER get any door knocking or solicitation where we live (I’m 3 miles from a paved road and probably a 20 minute drive from a “sidewalk”) but during Covid they switched to mailing me and never stopped. Sometimes in Spanish just for good measure.

I had the same thought the other idea. I have no interest in becoming any type of Christian, but boy would I be more drawn to the JW with their pamphlets and the friendly LDS missionary kids than the guy who screams invective into a megaphone in the free speech zone.

They are going to disappear someone, and a mother or father or sister or brother is going to turn into a Liam Neeson movie and become a folk hero that makes Luigi look like a flash in the pan.

Bad News: Trump has a level of elite media capitulation it took Fidesz and PiS years to consolidate
Good news: his numbers still suck and nobody believes anything the government says
Long term bad news: the probably never will again.

I used to give the arts specific tour at Bucknell and I think we did a good job. I wonder if they still do that. (I was not an artist but I guess I was nominally in a humanities major)

The liberal arts college tour actually talking about the liberal arts and not just STEM challenge.

Honestly if SB 79 works it should be good for a couple more congressional seats over the next decade.

Ladies and gentlemen, we did it. SB 79 has been signed.

My students asked me if Netanyahu killed him. It was all over social media apparently. I tried to respond as calmly as possible because I really want them to come ask me these questions and not shut down.

This is not terribly different from minority religion politics in the Mubarak era.

This is how Trumpism squares the circle of using antisemitic tropes against bad rootless diaspora Jews while also claiming to be acting to protect Jews. They, the Christian nationalists, get to decide who is a Jew and who is therefore deserving of protection. Jews as symbols of Christian politics.

I’ve got a weird take on it. It’s gross of course to make games out of such serious issues BUT in years past, my whole life, it just NEVER would have been discussed. The fact that they feel like they have to talk about it is a credit to the protesters and advocates who have pressed for so long.

My affiliation to the Boy Scouts is far more embarrassing than my fraternity. One was a quasi fascist brotherhood that indoctrinated sexism and racism. The other mostly drank beer.
