What D’Angelo said Black Messiah means. It came out at the end of 2014 and it was so needed.
Article (Nolan Feeney; TIME) excerpt reads: “Black Messiah is a hell of a name for an album. It can be misunderstood. Many will think it's about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I'm calling myself a Black Messiah. For me, the title is about all of us. It's about the world. It's about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah.

It's about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and in every place where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen, D'Angelo writes in a statement about the album It's not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them. Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are), but calling this album Black Messiah creates a landscape there these songs can live to the fullest. Black Messiah is not one man. It's a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader.”

“D’Angelo’s First Album in 14 Years Is Finally Here, and It’s Surprisingly Timely” via TIME.

Obviously.

I remember watching it for the first time randomly one day after school and thinking my eyes could not have opened wider. The possibilities of what I might see were thrilling (in addition to, of course, the actual music 😆)

genuinely a perfect song that he somehow made even more perfect.

3 classic albums. No skips. Love songs. Liberation songs. Sensual songs. Fun songs. Black ass music. 51 is too young. D'Angelo can't be gone.

Not to be basic, but Cruisin’ is one of my favorite songs of all time and D’Angelo’s cover is the best take on it. As someone who actively avoids covers most of the time, that’s no trivial opinion from me. It’s proof of everything he was as an artist.

And you’re right to think that because it’s true.

Rest in Power Miss Major.

I was so fortunate to profile Miss Major for SF Weekly.

From her political education from the leaders of the Attica prison uprising and getting knocked out by a cop at Stonewall to performing in the Jewel Box Revue and founding TGIJP, she led an extraordinary life.

Reading Miss Majors Speaks was an incredibly moving experience last year. I can't recommend this book enough for those unfamiliar with her work.

Rest in peace 🖤

Yes! Also am routinely irritated by those same people reposting and sharing articles and such about a developing story many hours after the fact, thereby sharing news that’s way out-of-date.

It also sounds like your great aunt trying to recall Goldie Hawn’s name and getting it just wrong enough for you to know who she’s talking about.

Never once seen anyone who considers themselves actually on the left (and not just cosplaying as a lefty to avoid social stigma) have anything but contempt and metaphorical middle fingers for him
