On Twitter by the end you'd pretty much every day be fed posts from people you hated sayings things you hated in order to bait you into dunking or rage-replying. Not one feed I've ever used here does that
hughster.bsky.social
I see a lot of comments on here along the lines of "what made Twitter bad was actually the algorithm". That's only half true: what made Twitter bad was *Twitter's* algorithm. None of the leading algorithms available here amplify toxicity in the same way and offer benefits over chronological-only

soz lads but if you're still on X you're feeding into Musk's wealth which is being used to fund Tommy Two Names' legal fees, and if you still continue using X, you're fine with that

Quite a bodying, here, for the UK, from the Commissioner for Human Rights, Council of Europe.

🏮 He points out the Supreme Court ignored human rights (which breaches its legal obligations)
🏮 He says, in effect agreeing with Lucy Powell, Parliament should be involved...

Surprisingly this is getting reported by the Times, Telegraph and Guido already—in the past they've conspicuously ignored any such CoE statements. Obviously they think it helps their anti-ECHR propaganda
hughster.bsky.social
Despite that I think they're aware that they'll be relying on "it's us or Reform" to bring people back. But having left the ECHR or pledged to do so that'd be very unlikely to work given avoiding leaving the ECHR would be a big part of why LDs/Greens/etc would want to vote tactically
hughster.bsky.social
My hunch is that No.10 want to do what they did in 2002, i.e. wait for the ECtHR to force them into changing the law and then begrudgingly changing it while saying "not our fault guv". Not sure the right-wing press would be quite as forgiving this time but hey
hughster.bsky.social
Indeed—the debate has sadly deteriorated to the point that it's a possibility. Good luck to Labour ever winning again if they do though and they'll be aware of that
hughster.bsky.social
One heck of a shot across the bows to the government from the CoE here—looks very likely they already know full well the coming EHRC guidance will be found to be in breach of ECHR Article 8

Read my two letters to the #UK:
1. Protests: I call for a review of the legal framework and the reconsideration of provisions in the Crime & Policing Bill that could restrict freedom of assembly.
2. Trans people: I warn against exclusion&zero-sum approaches

Jenrick is absurdly incoherent on principles of free expression because he wants immediate arrests for "Allahu Akbar" (God is Great) while turning up to court to defend shouting "Fuck Islam" while burning a Quran

Starmer being bumped off the lectern abruptly by Trump is humiliating, sure, but come on, it's clearly Trump's fault

X is quite literally funding the defence of the domestic extremists the government is prosecuting but they still won't stop using it

I don't dislike Polanski (I mean at least he's not Corbyn) but a lot of the breathlessly excited stuff on here does have unfortunate echoes of Swinson 2019

Not to worry, I'm sure our hyper-patriotic right-wing press will be all over this

Reform UK's deputy leader has broken parliamentary rules by failing to register hospitality. So what's the story with Richard Tice, the French villa and the ex-Kremlin minister?

Private schools are often much worse for bullying, *especially* if you're perceived to be "the poor kid"

This. And not only this: when Trump first won in 2016 it was a truism that "the UK would never vote for Trumpism" and now an openly Trumpian party is polling 10-15 points ahead. This country has already undergone measurable right-wing radicalisation that has gone largely unnoticed

With all due respect to Tom (seriously, not being sarcastic), I think he's wrong. Anyone who thinks this has not paid attention to how the successfully completely reversed the trajectory of trans equality in the UK in only 10 years.

They will probably manage the same with abortion.
tom--scott.bsky.social
Right-wingers who think tactics they've used to criminalize abortion in the US will have the same kind of traction in the UK fail to grasp that religious fundamentalism is widely viewed as nuts in the UK, & has been for many decades, if not centuries.

As much chance of abolishing UK gun controls.
