Squirrels Benefit From St. Matthew's Rover Hike

St. Matthew's Rover crew held a week-end camp recently along the Rideau river beyond Black Rapids.
Rover Leader T. M. Brown and Senior Rover Mate R. P. Stewart were in charge. Exploration of the country in and around Padgett's
creek proved most interesting, especially for those members of the crew who left parts of their nether garments behind on the barbed wire fences. Some of the members paddled to the site. The camp proved a great success, at least fo: the squirrels who made off with a pound of butter.
At a recent business meeting of the crew a committee was elected for the purpose of undertaking the redecoration of the Rover den.

DEATH OF JAMES SMITH.
Insurance companies Insinuate He
Was Not Blown to Atoms.

Smith's Falls, Ont., Dee. 21.-An extraordinary rumor is in circulation to the effect that the late blowing up of James Robert Smith by an explosion of dynamite on the Rideau river did not take place. It will be remembered that some weeks ago the late Mr. Smith with two companions went fishing on the Rideau, intending to use dynamite to kill the fish. An explosion occurred, blowing Mr. Smith's body into so many fragments that it could not be identified. It is alleged that Mr. Smith carried a large life insurance, and the companies inter-ested, it is said, will not now pay over the insurance money owing to the inability of identifying the body. It is admitted that the explosion took place, but it is insinuated that it was some other substance than Mr. Smith's body that was blown up. This seems extraordinary, as Mr. Smith's two companions ought to be sufficient evidence to establish his identification. Perhaps it is a case of bulldozing on the part of the insurance companies.

Municipal govs should not be in the business of funding private sports arenas. Yes, there may be some logic for economic dev that supports things like transit, housing or adjacent development and there is some contribution to overall city tourism, GDP. But we should not be hostage to sports teams

There’s some strange baseball poetry in the story behind how the #BlueJays & #Mariners entered the #MLB and American league the same year, 1976, yet have had very different histories. While the Jays have won two World Series, the Mariners have again been blocked from even reaching the World Series.⚾️

Lansdowne 2.0 risks giving residents less for more: higher ticket prices, a smaller arena, and higher debt. Similar promises in Lansdowne 1.0 fell short. This round is off to a bad start, and I’m calling on the Mayor to delay the vote until later in November.

Big changes need real scrutiny. Staff now estimate $65M from selling air rights for residential and hotel development, up from $39M. That’s a massive, unexplained jump. Councillors and the public have just eight days to review the details before a key committee meeting. That’s not enough.

The Mayor also dismissed community analysis of Lansdowne 2.0 as “misinformation.” That language disrespects residents who’ve worked hard to study this project’s finances. Their analysis raises real questions that deserve answers, not insults.

I’m deeply disappointed in how this process has unfolded, and in the disregard shown for Council by revealing staff recommendations early. This isn’t how collaborative government works, and it undermines trust in both City staff and the democratic process.

This morning, Mayor Sutcliffe held a press conference outlining the modified Lansdowne 2.0 recommendations before city councillors or the public had access to them. That’s unacceptable. Transparency and respect for Council should come before media rollouts.

Note the horse-drawn tram in the pic. Chances are photog Topley asked the conductor to park it for the shot, + hid the horses behind the tree stump (since they would've inherently moved, & consequently blurred).
