Just came back from The Hague, where I admired Vermeer's "View of Delft". Proust had Bergotte die in front of this painting during an artistic epiphany caused by "le petit
pan de mur jaune". There are many theories about which little yellow wall he had in mind. I'm convinced it's this one.

discovering Coleridge's Notebooks
during my seasonal browse, I noticed, on a top shelf, the bulky, creamy row of the Coleridge notebooks. They looked beautiful, like an imposing geological formation. I dragged over the step-stool, pulled down the heavy first volume and read the opening page. The entries were curious and compelling: two written-out arithmetic problems meant for a child; a description of a card trick; a fanciful etymology of the origins of the word smile; an analogy concerning cities, cottages and ruins; the beginning of a sermon on faith. What compelled me right away as I stood reading on the step-stool was the space travelled between the entries, the vivid suggestiveness of their non-causal sequence. I was plunged into the gregariously mobile associations of a seeking mind, with the implausible and so completely compelling sensation of thinking thoughts that were not my own, as those thoughts composed themselves.

why the film industry moved to Hollywood c. 1910:

(apart from good weather)

proximity to the border, for an easier getaway

(idk if this is still thought to be true, but it is a striking image)
from Brownlow, The Parade's Gone By (1968)

The fine weather was ertainly a major ncentive for many ompanies xO move their entire rganizations xO the West Coast, but Hollywood offered nother advantage. An industrial dispute, known as the Patents War and fought vith weapons nd violence enough xO justify the term, had forced several producers to flee from New York to Chicago -and even to Cuba. These producers had in- fringed the Edison patents by making equipment built from pirated designs. An immediate f the dispute was the Latham Loop, patented mechanism in- cause corporated in the camera. Hollywood offered an ideal sanctuary fOr refugees f the Patents ar, for should trouble appear, th Mexican border was a mere hundred-mile dtive away.

there was a time some years ago (this is true I think)

when they (Beetles) were summarily prohibited for a while, and people who didn't want to give them up had to quickly take them into exile in nearby cities

I must try to remember the details
