It's hard to help Americans left behind because so much of US identity is rooted in individualism. The average American conservative holds all three positions at once:

— Virtue signals about supporting US manufacturing
— Against raising the minimum wage
— Buys foreign imports because they're cheap
HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "I'm willing to pay more for quality products if they are made in America, by Americans, who are paid a decent income." The tweet shows Norman Rockwell's "Freedom of Speech" painting, which is often used to show the tweeter is expressing a brave opinion. HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "MINIMUM WAGE JOBS WERE NOT MEANT TO BE A CAREER. Why does no one understand this? Entry level jobs are STEPPING STONES to better jobs. No one wants to work towards that though." HardPass4 on Twitter tweets: "Buy $5 gloves instead of $50 ones. Trust me." The tweet shows a box of "Gorilla Grip" gloves. The label on Gorilla Grip gloves show they're made in China.

The Texas Military Department confirmed to @taskandpurpose.com it had replaced some of the 200 National Guard troops sent to Chicago for not being "in compliance" with validation standards. This came after photos of heavyset NG members were widely mocked. taskandpurpose.com/news/texas-n...

Just caught it in theaters yesterday. Looks great!

Yep. GitS isn't even the second or third best realization of that property in animation form. It's very pretty and has some iconic scenes, but it does basically nothing with a really great cast of characters. Perfect Blue on the other hand is, well, perfect.

Like, if you were born a hundred years before me, by the time you were my age you likely had gone from a world where you lived like it was the 18th century to one with flight, cars, electricity, and the radio. I got computer smaller and Internet faster.

It's always weird to me that people don't realize that we live a time of technological stagnation that hasn't really been seen since the industrial revolution. I mean, what has happened since the 90s that isn't just miniaturization, increased power, greater scale, of existing technologies?

what exactly has gotten better for the average person in the past 20 years with all the innovation such as AI, exactly? what's the social use case here

Truly a strange moment in the history of liberal democracy when you have to fall back on "well, at least we have the Pope".

Pope to journalists: “…it is worth remembering Hannah Arendt’s warning that ‘the ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction and the distinction between true and false no longer exist.’”

Since the Russian revolution at least

The current drift of German politics is not encouraging on that count. You have an ascendant far right all but embracing open Nazism and a liberal establishment that is aggressively flying cover for Israel and a center that is trying to split the difference between the two.

The Trump administration on Saturday scrambled to rescind layoffs of hundreds of CDC scientists who were mistakenly fired on Friday night in what appeared to be a substantial procedural lapse.

The writing was on the wall the second they started gleefully trawling Twitter and Facebook comments as though that counted as actual on the ground reporting. Was extremely clear to me circa 2010 that legacy media was throwing in the towel.

I have great news, only one in four of your neighbors voted for this.

the administration is laser-focused on making sure Americans don't get clean energy, so Saudi Arabia (Trump's paymaster) has someone to sell their oil to in 10 years when the rest of the world has moved on to solar+batteries

Picture how big the Hoover Dam is. An absolute unit. The Hoover Dam has a power capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW).

The solar farm that the Admin just cancelled could have produces 6.2 GW of power. That's more than 3 Hoover Dams.

SCOOP: The Bureau of Land Management says the largest solar project in Nevada — the Esmeralda 7 mega-farm — has been canceled

The news was quietly dropped via a sudden website update with no public word from any of the companies involved or a statement from the agency

Trump vs. US was the final straw imo. You cannot read that ruling and continue believing they have legitimacy. It is not only against the plain text of the constitution, it is anathema to the national ethos. It is offensively, insultingly un-American and they ceded legitimacy by committing that sin.

I like the idea that the world of Aliens is just so vast that things like this very easily go without notice. Oh, a new colony fair and everyone died? An ore hauler disappeared? Sure, whatever, happens all the time.

Extremely funny that they thought something hosted by Metaxas had any shot at mainstream appeal.

Also have some familiarity with Northern Oklahoma and agree that tulsa sits right on a cultural borderland
grumpyrootbeer.bsky.social
Very much agreed. I'm from the borderlands of the upper midwest and heartland by birth, education, and current residence and you can feel the difference going further north or further south. And Fargo, Sioux City, Omaha, and Wichita are very much the farthest west Midwestern cities.
williamhazen.bsky.social
This is the most accurate depiction of the Midwest to date. Wichita has always felt like the last Midwest city while also being the first plains city.
