"The EHRC’s exclusionary interim guidance has had a devastating impact on trans people’s lives"

“Now the guidance has been withdrawn, so should the exclusionary policies that organisations rashly implemented in its aftermath. If not, they could find themselves in hot water.”
EHRC withdraws interim guidance encouraging trans exclusion
After six months of confusion and delay, the EHRC has taken down interim guidance rushed out in April. But the damage has already been done.

“I’ve spent six months talking to trans people who are afraid to go out because of the climate of fear the EHRC’s interim guidance created,” Maugham said. “Some are suicidal – and I am aware of people who have sought to take their own lives." goodlaw.social/9j3v

Tuesday: Shabana Mahmood attacks an international human rights body for pointing out the UK is likely breaching its legal obligations to trans people.

Wednesday: five months after publishing transphobic legal guidance the EHRC, a month before it has to defend it in court, takes it down.

The EHRC has finally, five months after producing its wildly transphobic and, we believe, unlawful Interim Guidance now taken it down. Our judicial review challenge to that Interim Guidance will be heard in less than one month.

This is a very interesting initiative from @humanrightsvicky.bsky.social. Not wholly free of difficulty - what is? - but a very novel approach to the UK's profound backsliding on trans rights.

We have jointly applied to the Council of Europe formally to seek re-opening of enforcement of the case of Goodwin v UK under rule 9 of the Rules for the supervision of the execution of judgments and of the terms of friendly settlements, in the European Court of Human Rights. T

I was in a meeting yesterday warning that if we lose the ECHR we are Royally Fucked. I think people think it could never happen - but remember everyone said that about Brexit. Let’s not be as stupid as then.

Woah! So Labour's position really is, 'telling us off for breaching human rights undermines the case for human rights'? Proper Trumpian stuff from Labour's answer to Suella Braverman.

To give human rights only to those tyranny likes is to destroy their very purpose.

Shabana Mahmood knows what life is like for Muslims, and especially women. So why is she so willing to throw others to the Far Right wolves? Does she not understand they will also come for her? Or is her bet they will wait until after her political career? www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...

“The UK stands at a crossroads. Are we going to be a nation that respects its human rights obligations, or are we going to abandon them whenever the rightwing press demands it? First immigrants, then trans people – who next, Sir Keir?” – Jo Maugham (@goodlawproject.org)

I agree. As evident from the countries who have found the constraints of the ECHR too much to bear - who all fit your description perfectly.

Labour is telling you VERY LOUDLY who to vote for if you value human rights. And it's definitely NOT LABOUR.

Amazing to remember Mahmood once boasted: "We lay down in the street and we lay down inside Sainsbury's to say we object to them stocking goods from illegal settlements – and that they must stop. We managed to close down that store at peak time on a Saturday. This is how we can make a difference."

If Labour doesn't intend to adhere to its human rights obligations anyway, there's little point in us being signatories to the ECHR. Better, more honest, for Mahmood to join Reform in campaigning to leave it.

Pretty sure it won't be after the next General Election.

The response from Keir Starmer's spokesman - a denial there is a problem, a denial he must know to be untrue - strongly suggests Labour is no longer concerned to adhere to its human rights obligations.

With apologies, we've taken down the blogged update to our judicial review of the EHRC whilst we sort out the links.
