Honestly wonder at this point how many media/political figures would endorse an Imperial Japan-style arrangement where the police in major cities have an explicit veto over governmental policy.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

It's something I've wanted to explore for a while; imho by the start of the 19th century an era of European hegemony was inevitable, but the total conquest of the planet by the Imperial powers was very much not! As late as the 1860s the British were talking about withdrawal from W. Africa.

There was a lot of mixing between escaped slaves and the Seminole, Choctaw, etc in Florida and the Deep South already, and most of them ended up being deported, plus large numbers of ethnically indeterminate Caribbeans, plus semi-voluntary relocation of "civilized" tribes in return for land grants.

Have not worked out details in any way but this world definitely has less overt colonization of Africa and more economic influence and independent settlements right from the start.
