Here’s what I know: I showed up to court with a lawyer and got a deferred adjudication that messed up my teen years but allowed me to go on to adulthood unimpeded. The Latino kid in front of me showed up with his mom, had the same charge, and got six months in juvey. Even at 13 in 1994 I knew why.

As someone who was charged with menacing with a deadly weapon a week before her 13th birthday, I would like to send a hearty fuck you to anyone who thinks a child can be a hardened criminal.
