‘There, look.’

The bird is too far above to make out, really. From sea level, it’s nothing more than a black skirr against the morning’s blood-orange splash, but it’s taken a while to spot her again, dancing on wind drifts and, Stede assumes, getting a good look at the day that’s creeping towards them over the horizon, and he’s not going to let her out of his sight now.

‘Do you see?’ He turns, finger still raised. ‘Ed?’

‘Mm?’

Ed’s reclined lazily along the gunwale. He’s got his back against the rise of the forecastle and his legs dangling on either side of the barrier, and Stede takes a moment to enjoy the thrill of pleasure at being able to look at each of these things and name them. Gunwale! Forecastle! Boyfriend!

What a thing.

Sometimes I remember worrying that I was embarrassing when I started sharing my fanart. I fell so hard & so fast for our pirates. Then a pro comic artist I really look up to just out of the blue told me my OFMD stuff was "beautiful work". It was like he knew I needed to hear it right at that moment.

SCENE FROM CHAPTER 16 OF "PROVE IT":

This must be an acceptable response, because Stede kisses him harder; his hands move to the back of Ed’s neck, reeling him in. And Ed’s torn, because being pressed up against Stede Bonnet like this is, objectively, the best place to be in the entire world . . . But, also, he was serious about not intending to get things started again until Stede completed his baking practice today.

So Ed pulls back a little and—in what’s a stroke of either genius or madness—grabs a spare baking tray off the counter. He slides it between them like a barrier, like a giant rectangular chastity belt, and Stede’s eyes widen as the metal pops and clangs. But he doesn’t resist when Ed moves in for another kiss over it. He just rolls with the weirdness—even grabs the edges of the tray to help hold it in place.
