we’ve gone so far past “sex workers are the canaries in the coal mine” re: internet freedom, to an internet that’s run off and robbed from all the sex workers in order to replace them with planet-destroying simulations of sex workers

Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year
We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

Labour's employer NI contribution changes were bad enough that they've got me, a communist, advocating for relieving the tax burden on businesses. Immigration changes are another self own for no gain.

One mistake Labour made in their first year is loading quite a few new costs onto business all at once. They are risking doing something similar on immigration, I think.

I'm from Stornoway and my family comes from Wick, so I have very little time for these travel hardship stories.

Can't believe someone a) had the data to write this paper b) wrote this paper www.nber.org/papers/w3434...

1984 is the most overrated books of all time and one of the least helpful books for understanding authoritarianism. In fact, I would go so far as saying it has had a small role in making centrists lose their minds this last decade.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

There is no shortcut to thinking, nor, indeed should there be in paid employment for thinking.

The thing that fucks me off about this is the 12,000 job losses that have been announced in the sector. This openness about not doing your actual job is a spit in the face to those who now can't.

Seeing people nonchalantly post stuff like makes me feel like I'm going crazy honestly.
A post from an academic on blue sky that says: "I'm learning about "prompt engineering" when asking LLMs to extract data. I now add this to all instructions:

Style
Be concise, analytic, and specific (cite page/figure if provided). If essential info is missing, keep going but flag Unclear and exact data needed. Never invent data.

Total banger. Definitely better than the Gareth Gates version.

I lost faith in her when she basically blocked anyone on the other place for offering mild criticism. I think Brexit got me blocked.

Imagine admitting that you didn’t do your own work and that you’re basing your claims to epistemic authority on the computational equivalent of a game of snap.
No, I already have the papers. I want it to read the papers.

Well, one of those songs you don't realise it's a cover. I think I only learned it was a cover quite recently!

I had the same feeling when I was in Copenhagen this summer.

did an online OU tutorial. of course there's that male student doing an English course that says "as a writer, Thomas Hardy makes me pull my hair out"

Oh god, I love the Concretes. I was just ranting about how great they were to a friend last month. Of course this fits with your Scandi vibes.

Yeah, Bob didn't go electric until this! Definitely in the spirit.
