Not to over-romanticise Japan, but this little snippet from an article about vending machines hits especially hard having just got back from Tokyo.
There were so many times we saw something cool, like vending machines, or coin lockers, and thought "someone would just piss in that in the UK" :(

Lack of crime

Japan has an astonishingly low crime rate. Vandalism is extremely rare, considerably reducing the cost of running a vending machine.

This means there’s fewer costs associated with cleaning or repair — and the vending machines can be out on the street night and day, increasing sales.

One of the saddest things about travelling around Japan as a westerner is seeing all the nice things, and thinking, if that was in the UK it would be destroyed in a day. I desperately want hot corn soup when i’m waiting for a train in the rain. Why can’t we have nice things?
