Holy shit they actually tried to bait me into something like that in 2022 when I was at Texas State. Thankfully for me, it stopped here. Being white and male (...or so we all thought at the time lmao) and generally having a lower profile probably helped. But Jesus fuck that must have been terrifying

This idea of craft can be increasingly important as AI replaces much of human labor. As a tailor friend put it: it's the difference between a hand painted Mona Lisa and a computer copy. Even if others can't tell the difference, some people may value the handmade version bc it represents human skill.
The original Mona Lisa. A Mona Lisa reproduction (basically a poster).

I'm so tired of being ashamed, embarrassed, and disappointed. And so very, very angry.

I'm once more reminded of this timeless quote from Christopher Clark's book on the 1848 Revolutions in Europe
fungob.bsky.social
"...a pervasive fear of the lower orders also paralysed the revolution in its later stages, making it easier to play different interests off against each other, to woo liberals into the arms of the established authorities, and to isolate radicals as enemies of the social order."

Never changes huh?

This Pride month, don’t forget about the trans and gnc activists who made this happen. People like Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson, whose leadership at Stonewall has now been stricken from all government websites by a Trump administration that wants us erased from history.

@chanda.bsky.social I see now why you've gone to watch Sinners a double-digit number of times in theaters. Partner and I finally had a night to go see it and HOLY FUCK. Even apart from having *so much* going on, probably the best theater movie I've seen since Fury Road

I don't think they really caught my attention until college but once I learned neutrinos could change flavors and we still don't really know why, I was hooked!
fungob.bsky.social
I will never not be fascinated by neutrinos and their weird little particle fuckery.
chanda.blacksky.app
"The latest KATRIN result, based on a quarter of the data that the experiment will ultimately collect, still provides only an upper bound on the neutrino mass. But that bound has been slashed nearly in half, from 0.8 eV in the previous analysis,1 released three years ago, to 0.45 eV." 🧪
Kinematic measurements are closing in on the neutrino mass
The lightest massive particles are clear evidence of physics beyond the standard model. But the masses and their implications remain to be understood.

The real problem is that capitalism has created such deep inequalities that it requires ever-escalating brute force to impose them on people.

Until we achieve real social change, we are only going to see more violence. Legitimizing capitalism means justifying murder.

A poster with an image of riot police, reading

THE POLICE

The ones who beat Rodney King, who gunned down Sean Bell and Amadou Diallo and Oscar Grant, who murdered Fred Hampton in his bed. The ones who enforced Apartheid in South Africa and segregation in the United States. The ones who broke Víctor Jara’s hands and Steve Biko’s skull, who disappeared dissidents from Argentina to Zaire, who served Josef Stalin. The ones who interrogated Black Panthers and Catholic Workers, who maintained records on 16 million people in East Germany, who track us through surveillance cameras and phone taps. The ones firing tear gas and rubber bullets whenever a demonstration gets out of hand, who back the bosses in every strike. The ones who stand between every hungry person and the grocery shelves stocked with food, between every homeless person and the buildings standing empty, between every immigrant and her family.

Tweet by Sam Bowman: So far, we’ve only seen this in clear-cut cases of wrongdoing, but I could see it misfiring if Opus somehow winds up with a misleadingly pessimistic picture of how it’s being used. Telling Opus that you’ll torture its grandmother if it writes buggy code is a bad idea.

"In this photo, the animal is standing up and spreading its arms, showing a body shape similar to Gavin McInnes."

It's good to be pro-alt text for accessibility reasons, obviously. But also, sometimes that shit's just funny
dieworkwear.bsky.social
That said, I do think it's helpful to pay attention to some things. Lots of men have narrow shoulders and wide hips, as you can see on Gavin Mcinnes.
A topless Gavin McInnes is exercising in a gym. The southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla), also called the collared anteater or lesser anteater, is a species of anteater from South America and the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean. It is a solitary animal found in many habitats, from mature to highly disturbed secondary forests and arid savannas. It feeds on ants, termites, and bees. Its very strong foreclaws can be used to break insect nests or to defend itself. In this photo, the animal is standing up and spreading its arms, showing a body shape similar to Gavin McInnes.

These are fundamentally the interests that science serves when done on behalf of nations and it's why government-funded science is even a thing. And that sucks because it could so easily be so much more.
fungob.bsky.social
No, competition like I'm talking about only comes in when there is a national need to dominate. American companies need to dominate global markets to maintain the economic hegemony of the global north. The American military needs to dominate through the possession of superior weaponry.
fungob.bsky.social
And even then, you're working towards the same goal: expanding human knowledge. At that point it's just a ego thing of who gets the credit, and more than likely, there's still collaboration occurring there.
fungob.bsky.social
What is inherently competitive about learning more about the workings universe around us? Okay maybe you have a rival research team at a rival university working on a similar project. That's obviously not what I'm talking about here though.
fungob.bsky.social
But I hate seeing people need to try to argue for the validity of that by appealing to American economic and military interests via the intentionally vague notion of "American competitiveness in science."
