Someone rebuked me for saying out loud what everyone knows:

This person, I can say, was almost certainly traumatised as a child. They sought out spirituality to heal those wounds. Now they are reverting to hard beliefs as they hit a wall and didn't get the help they needed. Community is everything when it comes to healing - even if that's a community of two.

Be there for them is the most important thing. Show up. Ask what's up. If they say something you know not to be true, resist the temptation to prove it. Instead ask questions and probe their belief - lead them to a point where they see the inconsistency. Let them find out, as you hold space.

Great resources Hilary. This site from Jim Hopper at Harvard is one I've recommended for years. Jim works with mindfulness and trauma. It's a really good place to start for people who want to become more aware of their conditioning safely.

right there on the spot you can see a their humanity. All people are born the way they are and fundamentally good. A very few don't get empathy and need to be watched and managed. Most don't. Most are good inside and if they act out fascist or racist stuff, that was learned and can be unlearned.

anyone can change. The most hardcore racist or fascist can heal from whatever wound made them that way. A simple truth I've pointed out to racists in the past: if they were in a car crash and bleeding out, the blood of their enemy could save them. I've said this to people and seen them rethink.

We will not break the chains and heal the world - which has to be the project to counter fascism - unless we realise everybody is a creation both of the circumstances they lived through, and their own choices. Aside from a small percentage of people who are psychopaths (and need to be managed)

Once I had lunch with a very learned Tibetan master. I asked him what he considered the most important teaching of Buddhism to be. He laughed at my question, "oh Matthew. You do pick the easy ones. The most important teaching is that you can change yourself". You can - and it's easier in community.
