Weather word of the week: blustery.

A common weather term you hear in the fall is “blustery”. Did you know that is actually a scientific term? Blustery is used to describe winds that are blowing between 15 to 25 mph.

NOAA’s National Weather Service Winter Outlook has been released.

This outlook shows the likely temperature and precipitation the U.S. could experience during meteorological winter (December 1, 2025 through February 28, 2026) and drought conditions through January 31, 2026.

Weather word of the week: lake breeze.

As incoming solar radiation reaches the earth, air over land areas heats up much faster than air over adjacent bodies of water due to the high specific heat capacity of the water. This causes the warmer air over the land to begin to rise.
A recent study found that the world’s largest capital cities are now experiencing 25% more extremely hot days each year compared to the 1990s. The number of days above 35C in 43 of the world’s most populous capital cities rose from an average of 1,062 per year from 1994-2003 to 1,335 from 2015-2024.

The most accurate combination was found in Hawaii & California, with each having 5 locations ranked in the top 10. (1/2)
Weather word of the week: time zone.

A time zone is an area which observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, & social purposes. Time zones were introduced in the late 19th century & tend to follow the boundaries between countries, but roughly follow lines of longitude every 15 degrees.
A new climate analysis from @accuweather.com revealed that flooding events in the U.S. are significantly increasing despite no apparent change in annual precipitation amounts.

The number of extreme precipitation events has doubled, and daily 4-inch rain events have increased about 70% since 1965.
