At a professional conference, scribbling "citation needed" in the margins of the descriptions for various talks.

You can take me out of academia, but it lives on in my soul.

I was just going through a box of my old memorabilia, and I thought I’d share this concert ad from 1984 (just in case you thought my biopic was LYING about Howie Mandel opening for me!)

Remember the Year of the MOOC from a decade ago? The one where tech bros predicted the end of all but 3-4 universities because who needs campuses when everyone can just take MOOCs and learn everything? Hits a little different now after pandemic pedagogy, huh? The tech hype cycle is a helluva drug.

Spare a thought for Napoleon, who is in the Bag of Doom as we head to the vets.

He has an operation today to remove what's left of a broken tooth.

He is not pleased with his current situation, or lack of breakfast.

(The Tortie showed solidarity by sprinting for the cat flap when she saw the bag)

I tried to ask how to remove Gemini from Chrome and kept getting answers from Gemini. Which, of course, didn't work.

It's like they're trying to convince me to ignore "important" software updates, huh.

I liked how Brazilian Army forces fighting in Italy in WW2 had a shoulder patch of a snake smoking a pipe.
Second World War Brazilian Expeditionary Forces patch of a green snake on a yellow background smoking a pipe. The word 'Brasil' is at the top in white letters on a royal blue field. The entire insignia is bordered in red.

every day I wake up and scroll past at least five new posts that some poor kid in the year 2225 is going to have to memorize for the midterm of his "History 301: The Rise of 21st Century Ultra-Fascism" course

I really adore the phase after a mass Twitter exodus event where that small minority of asshole new users get their shit totally wrecked by the effectiveness of blocks and blocklists on here

it’s like watching a baby gazelle get eaten by a crocodile in a muddy river

I gotta propose like, just absolutely the most cursed polyreme oar setups. Like, 1-3-1 or a seven that is 5-2-1 (or 1-2-5!). A hexereme that is 1-2-3 or 4-2 or 5-1.

Deceres with 4-3-2-1. Just, maximum cursed.

A “5” could mean 2-2-1 or 3-2 or 5 (ew). Debate continues, but I lean toward the 2-2-1 configuration, with more men per oar at a maxed three levels. But what the hell is a “40”. Anyone writing on this topic…good luck. So much scholarship.

Happy book week to Hiron Ennis for the excellent The Works of Vermin, out yesterday.

Queer inventive lyrical anticapitalist biopunk for fans of The Fifth Season, Absolution, or The Iron Dragon's Daughter.

Finally done with Oktoberfest gigs. Today our clarinetist couldn't make it, so I was on my C-melody sax as "solo instrument that can be heard over 4 accordions," rather than playing the bass line on my oneba. (That is a tuba joke, yes. Euphoniums get called onebas.)

The trees are divided between green, red, and yellow. The sky is a mottled gray. The brewery near this bus stop is emitting a strong yeast-and-malt odor. Truly, the best part of autumn.
