You're writing this down right? Good. As I was saying my car sucked so bad my wife left me. Yes I can spell my name for you.

Jennifer Welch is a light in a very dark world right now.
here's cory booker @booker.senate.gov absolutely crapping the bed when given mild and correct criticism over his votes for trump nominees while claiming to be a leader of the opposition against fascism. kudos to the @ivehaditpodcast.bsky.social podcast

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

I feel like we should wait at least a week for all the parties involved to follow through, because it wouldn’t be the first time that an announcement was made a bit premature. From this morning: www.independent.co.uk/news/world/m...

Promoting the editor-in-chief's personal side project. Zero named sources in a story that promotes the editor-in-chief's personal political position. Misspelling the subject's name. It took one day for CBS News to become a conservative blog.

I was gonna say, this is like buying a truck to tow a trailer based on the Miles per Gallon spec. Sure, you can probably derive the end result, but it'd be easier to _start with your requirements_ than the end result.

Had to log into Instagram today. Figured I might peruse the timeline there for a bit, but stopped after every single ad was for boner pills that I’m convinced are just placebos for 60 year old dudes who are nostalgic about taking shitty doped up ecstasy in a club bathroom.
An ad from Instagram for an ED pill called “ro” which appears to be a pressed pill with a fire motif that looks identical to illegal drugs from the mid 2000s.

It's crazy that history books all imply if not outwardly state that we failed the reconstruction era by aborting it too soon and not finishing the job, and then we continue to this day to fail to follow up on the job of ridding society of those same actors.

Tron is nostalgia, and I'm personally tired of being reminded that sci-fi stories and special effects in the 80's and 90's was objectively mediocre. Yet I enjoyed it and have positive memories of it, and every "reboot" of something I have positive memories of sours the franchise. Just let shit die.

I mean, for what they are getting it’s not a big deal. Only when the SecDef is a complete moron and is incapable of communicating the trivialness of an existing relationship that’s been in place for over 3 years does it become a big deal.

This was my take as well. ML/In-Silico novel research is super valuable, but it doesn't exclude humans from reviewing the output.

This is bullshit. The LLM happily spit out words that are used in papers and publications that have previously announced the design and synthesisation of viruses, but it did nothing of the sort. We don't even know if this virus is viable.
“In September, scientists at Stanford reported they had used A.I. to design a virus for the first time.”

My point is, just because a computer says it made a brand new novel thing, it still requires skilled humans to review that output to see if it's not complete bullshit. This here is complete bullshit until proven otherwise.

The company I used to work for was using ML/AI/LLMs to help synthesize new molecular entities for research during in-silico drug discovery. A HUGE number of those molecules were technically stable, but there was no pathway to synthesize them without blowing up a lab or hiring a particle accelerator.

I'm sure there's some well meaning uses of it, but that TTS voice has as much of a positive connotation to me as the phrase "Nigerian Prince" anymore.

All of 2016 to 2021 was filled with anecdotes of "My DMs are filled with horrified Republicans".

None of those DMs were published. None of those Republicans acted on their horror. At the end of the day, they realized it helped them and they're still actively cheering it on in public.
