Another strong drive from Alan Jones (Shadow-Ford-DN8), 4th & narrowly missing the final podium spot. Jacques Laffite was 5th in a Ligier-Matra-JS7. Riccardo Patrese scored his first World Championship point, 6th in the other Shadow.

In the last Grand Prix appearance for a six-wheeled car, Patrick Depailler finished 3rd in the Tyrrell-Ford-P34. Teammate Ronnie Peterson retired on lap 6 after a collision with Gilles Villeneuve.

1976 World Champion James Hunt raced his McLaren-Ford-M26 to his 10th & last Grand Prix victory. It would be the last Japanese Grand Prix until 1987 & the last Grand Prix at Fuji Speedway until 2007.

At Fuji Speedway, Hunt (McLaren-Ford-M26) won the Japanese GP, his 10th GP victory. The race was marred by the deaths of a marshal & a photographer, hit by debris from the lap 6 collision between Gilles Villeneuve & Ronnie Peterson.

Gilles Villeneuve (Ferrari 312T2) & Ronnie Peterson (Tyrrell-Ford-P34) collided on lap 6 of the Japanese Grand Prix. A marshal and a photographer were killed by debris from the accident.

John Surtees (Cooper-Maserati) won the season-ending Mexican Grand Prix, securing runner-up spot in the Drivers' Championship. World Champion Jack Brabham (Brabham-Repco) finished 2nd, teammate Denny Hulme in 3rd.

#HappyBirthday to Alex Zanardi, 59 today.

Zanardi started 41 GPs (1991-1999), finishing 6th at Interlagos in 1993. He won CART titles (1997-1998), but lost both legs in a crash at Lausitz (2001). Zanardi won races in an adapted BMW in the WTCC, & later had huge success in para-cycling.

Remembering Giacomo "Geki" Russo, born #OnThisDay in 1937.

A three-time Italian Formula Junior champion, Russo also won the 1964 Italian F3 championship. He raced a works Lotus at the Italian Grand Prix (1965, 1966) finishing 9th at the 1966 race.

2006 – Alonso’s second Championship and Schumacher’s last Ferrari drive.

It appeared to be the end of an era when Michael Schumacher finished fourth #OnThisDay 22 October at the 2006 Brazilian Grand Prix, his final race for Ferrari after an iconic career.

1995 – Benetton driver Michael Schumacher claimed his second World Championship #OnThisDay 22 October, with a victory at Japan’s Pacific GP.

However, the race was overshadowed by a heated dispute with Williams driver Damon Hill, triggered by Schumacher’s criticism of Hill’s driving.

Remembering Innes Ireland #OnThisDay 22 October, one of motor racing’s great personalities, who passed away at age 63 in 1993, after a battle with cancer.

Ireland’s racing career began in earnest at the age of 27 in 1957.

1989 – Alain Prost secured the Drivers’ Championship #OnThisDay 22 October, but the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix became one of the sport’s most controversial moments.

Prost arrived in Japan with a 16-point lead, not needing a win to claim his third world championship.

#OnThisDay in 2006, in SΓ£o Paulo, after a puncture that had dropped him to the back of the field, Michael Schumacher raced brilliantly to 4th, a fitting end to a stunningly successful #F1 career. He later returned, with Merc, but IMHO he probably shouldn’t have.

The ’89 #JapaneseGP, run #OnThisDay 36 years ago, is (in)famous for the disqualification of winner Senna, which went to an appeal court 5 days later, where the drivers’ title was decided in Prost’s favour. Nannini (pic), having finished 2nd on the road, took his sole #F1 GP win.
