Clay Regazzoni died #OnThisDay in 2006, aged 67; 3 other Ferrari #F1 drivers lost their lives on public roads after having retired from racing, and all of them were fascinating characters. I wrote a #MotorSport column about all 4. Click below to read it.

I'm on my way to a Chanukah event. It should be a celebration but instead our community is once again mourning.

I will be thinking of everyone in Australia and those around the world in the Jewish Community who know this fear and loss.

We stand with you.

#LookUpLondon: this tatty & unprepossessing terraced house at 22 Cleveland Street, Fitzrovia, London, was not once but twice the home of the great Charles Dickens. #AnorakFact: it was known as 10 Norfolk Street in Dickens’ day. #HistoryOnTheHoof

Well done Alfie Burden, 2025 #Snooker #Shootout champion. However, I didn’t watch a single second of it, nor am I remotely interested in it: it’s too fast & too rowdy. Snooker is snooker, darts is darts, & snooker shouldn’t attempt to be darts.

Remembering Bob Drake, born #OnThisDay in 1919. He started one #F1 GP, at Riverside in ’60, in a privateer Maserati 250F (pic), the final appearance of that iconic race car in a championship F1 GP - #AnorakFact. Drake was a racer, stunt performer, naval diver & restaurateur.

In my friend Richard Williams’ & my new episode of our #F1 history podcast #AndColossallyThatsHistory we tell the amazing stories of 6 drivers who spent at least 20 hours (& in one case all 24) at the wheel during a single #LeMans24Hours race. Click below.

#HappyBirthday Emerson Fittipaldi, 79. I found ghost-writing his 2014 autobiography, #EmmoARacersSoul, a privilege & a pleasure. Here he is signing copies at Monza in 2014, in the McLaren Brand Centre, where we launched the book to the #F1 media. You can buy copies on Amazon.

Are you a McLaren fan? If you are, today is a very special day for you, for #OnThisDay in ’59, at Sebring (Florida), the great Bruce McLaren won an #F1 GP for the first time, in a Cooper T51, at the then record youngest age of 22 years, 3 months, 12 days.

Nice little story in the ‘i’ paper on Damon Hill’s & Johnny Herbert’s new #F1 podcast. They’re 2 good guys - & their chemistry is great, too. Sky Sports F1’s loss is The Race Media’s gain!

I’ve just been sent this pic of Haas #F1 boss Ayao Komatsu being interviewed by Karun Chandhok at the #MotorSport dinner on Tuesday. Silhoutetted in the foreground are yours truly & McLaren legend Jo Ramirez, next to whom I sat & with whom I chatted at length. A great evening.

McLaren ran joint number-1 drivers this year, winning the #F1 drivers’ & constructors’ titles. But running things so fairly risks defeat in the drivers’ championship. That’s what happened in ’73, ’81, ’83, ’86 & 2008. My new #MotorSport column explains.

A harmonious McLaren beat the brute brilliance of Max Verstappen in 2025, but its collaborative approach hasn't always succeeded against the razor-sharp focus of a one-driver F1 team

Remembering Jacques Swaters, boss of Écurie Francorchamps & Écurie Nationale Belge, & a big Ferrari collector, who died #OnThisDay 15 years ago, aged 84. He raced 7 GPs (’51-54) in his own Talbot-Lagos & of course Ferraris. Pic: Ferrari 500/625, Bremgarten, ’54.

My brand-new #MotorSport column examines the pros & cons of #F1 teams running a number-1 driver & a number-2 (Red Bull) as opposed to running 2 number-1s (McLaren). It worked for McLaren this year, but it was squeaky-bum time towards season’s end!

#HappyBirthday André Milhoux, 97, a touring car racer who was a guest of Gordini for the ’56 #GermanGP. André Pilette was injured in practice so Milhoux took over his Gordini T32, qualified it 22nd & last, & thereby drove a one-off #F1 GP at Nürburgring. F1 was different then!

Remembering Bernardus ‘Ben’ Pon, born #OnThisDay in ’36, who won his class at Le Mans in ’61 & ’67, & raced just once in #F1, at Zandvoort in ’62, in this cute Ecurie Maarsbergen Porsche 787. He spun on lap 3, the car flipped, he flew out, & he landed in a bush, uninjured. (1/2)

Sam Tingle won the non-championship #F1 #VanRiebeeckTrophy at Killarney in an LDS Mk3. #AnorakFact 1: Killarney remains unaltered since its last facelift in ’60. #AnorakFact 2: LDS cars were made by Doug Serrurier, full name Louis Douglas Serrurier, born #OnThisDay in 1920.

#OnThisDay a year ago, in Abu Dhabi, my good friend Kevin Magnussen drove his 185th & (so far) last #F1 GP. Fittingly, he notched up the fastest lap - a nice way to bow out of F1. Lando Norris won the race.

Now that the 2025 #F1 season has concluded in Abu Dhabi - with Lando Norris crowned as the new F1 world champion - let’s now retune our TVs to BBC1, then later BBC2, to enjoy the final of the #UKChampionship #Snooker. It’s a slower sport, yes, but it’s often just as tense!
December 7, 2025 at 3:02 PM
It’s official! Lando Norris completes the UK’s #F1 #First11. Today he became the 11th British F1 world champion, after Mike Hawthorn, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, John Surtees, Jackie Stewart, James Hunt, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Lewis Hamilton & Jenson Button. Bravo 👏! #AbuDhabiGP

Remembering Ottorino Volonterio, born #OnThisDay in 1917. A gentleman racer, he drove 3 #F1 GPs in privateer Maseratis, none at speed. Pic (by Bernard Cahier): making stately progress at Nürburgring in ’56; he qualified 20th & last, 4min 25.9sec off Juan Manuel Fangio’s pole.

#HappyBirthday Hermano da Silva Ramos - who, since he turns 100 today, is the oldest living driver to have raced in an #F1 GP, which is an #AnorakFact. Oh & here’s another #AnorakFact: he raced in 7 F1 GPs, & his best result was 5th, in a Gordini Type-16, at Monaco, in ’56 (pic).
