Can’t go to One Battle After Another at the local drive-in because I have shows those nights. This is killing me (figuratively).
Marquis for wooded drive-in theatre showing One Battle After Another and Soinal Tap 2.

Tennesee Williams said, 'I don't want realism, I want magic!' Yes. His plays are like fever dreams. But this is often used to justify pointless whimsy, spectacle for its own sake, etc.

It’s always awkward to have the “I’m not interested in realism” discussion with coworkers. I tend to avoid it and say mm-hm.

The lychee flavor of Fanta is god-tier.

I’m VERY interested in developing a relationship with the audience where they enthusiastically thrown down their disbelief.

Steve Coogan worked on Spitting Image and he’s only a decade older than me?! Jesus Christ.

Quiz Show tells us that the winners of “21” the early sixties won about 20k per episode, just like “Jeopardy” today.

The character in performance can be any style you describe; the behavior, voice, rhythms, etc. But the interior processes of getting there are up to only me. :)

And yet Trump can never be prosecuted because of that Supreme Court ruling. The justices have legalized murder, exactly as was argued in court at the time

Unless and until some kind of compelling legal and moral argument is presented as to why this is a legitimate use of deadly force, this is just…mass murder.

The military has now killed 27 people as if they were enemy soldiers in a war zone and not criminal suspects. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/14/u...

A Thousand Clowns is one of those like Network, where I almost forget Beatrice Straight amidst the fireworks of everyone else, and then I watch and am transfixed. Martin Balsam is sensational in everything but here he’s singular.

For the genre (rules include no characters that are sympathetic) Barbarians at the Gate holds up very well. Late career Garner was as good as early or mid, Joanna Cassidy and Jonathan Pryce perfect as ever, Rasche and Riegert. Gelbart hell yeah. F Dalton Thompson pretty much plays his own douche.

It’s been fun being attacked for years for saying bigotry motivates these people more than low taxes and small government

All this stuff came on the heels of three years (~30 shows) in classical rotating rep companies with a ton of improv included (Keegan MK was an instructor at my grad school in Detroit every semester). Already used to what could be conflicting theories being treated as equally valid. Make your own.

Everything is fair game if it works and an infinite number of choices CAN work for any given moment. Always love/embrace what happens. Lots and lots of lessons from back then are still immediate for me. Every artist is from-the-ground-floor different and theatre is cooperation among infinite styles.

Worked with so many fun writers I became convinced acting is writing your character (not dialogue lol) in real time. Audiences are always smart and curious, like to be surprised and they sense when you’re not really really into what you’re doing. Just standing onstage should be fun and exhausting.

David Patrick Kelly is the only thing Only Murders got right this season. Jesus he’s still a gem. My hero.

I got to work pretty closely with Anna Deavere Smith for a few months in my 20s. It was her, a half-dozen LAByrinth members and me, and it reprogrammed and replaced a lot of what I’d been as a young actor.

When I first moved to New York, I did energetic free stuff with Ridiculous Theatrical alums, played at La MaMa and The Brick, Kraine and Ohio, HERE, The Connelly and The Metropolitan Playhouse. Black-Eyed Susan gave great advice; so did Ellen Stewart and Sam Shepard. I still come at stuff sideways.

It is tacky for really famous people to be in TV commercials for products. Their gambling debts/boat repairs are not my problem, those roles should belong to actors like the Time To Make The Donuts guy and the actress who said "who are you calling a cootie queen you lint licker" in that Orbit ad.
