Ooh, tough one. There will usually be an initial seeded one and then more will follow organically as it develops and makes sense. For my current project, they’re very strangers to friends to lovers, and some black cat x black cat dynamics emerged from there. #romanceauthor #pretendpanel

SAYING GOODBYE TO him was like being a teenager again. The parents that were in neither of our houses had gone away for the weekend and we’d spent a blissful evening indulging in grown up things that were way too much for us but that left me sore in addition to us being deeply and deliriously happy.

I’d slept soundly through the night and woke up when the sun started to peek into my bedroom and gave us no choice but to face the day, and Mick cleaned up in the bathroom before getting dressed in his clothes from the day before with all the smirky smugness of someone who… well, had gotten laid. He glanced at me and I smiled sweetly, curled up under the duvet.

At least the shoe fit.

“Where are you off to?” I asked.

“Putting in a new toilet over in Addison,” he said. “I have to go pick it up first. Won’t take me more than three hours.” A beat passed and he turned to sit on the edge of the bed as he unknotted his shoelaces. “I can come back here after,” he said, chin doubled as he pulled at them. “If you’re not too sick of me.”

“I’m sure we can find something for you to do,” I said. He met my eyes, then, his brilliant smile full of mirth, and I stretched. My muscles pulled in an achingly once familiar way before I threw the duvet off and scurried to grab the bathrobe off the back of my door. “Do you want coffee?” I asked as I tied it around my waist and secured it. “Something before you get on the road?”

Romance, pretty much all flavors. I’ve read romcoms for the most part, because that’s what I write so it’s what I read because I enjoy it, but also to stay up-to-date on trends, etc., but I’ve been known to love romantasy, historical romance, and things with considerably less com in them. 💋

Hmm… Abbie might tell her story through a script one day. Maxx would keep no evidence. Rose writing things down would mean acknowledging her feelings. Mattie… is a toss-up. Reggie has a blog/podcast, so she definitely has records of everything. #amwriting

“Do you want him?” Mick asked.

“What?”

“Do you want him? If he doesn’t want you, or a future with you, do you want him? Do you want someone who doesn’t want you?”

It shouldn’t be the first time I heard that. But everyone else — Blake, Aunt June — coached me that I better off without him. “No,” I whispered, but I didn’t sound convincing even to my ears.

He cupped my face in both his hands and I held my breath. His serious brows were furrowed and his eyes darted back and forth between mine. “You are incredible.” He spoke slowly, distinctly, so there could be no mistaking what he was saying or how serious he was. “I don’t know someone who wouldn’t think that. And he will live every day knowing that he made the fucking choice to leave you and that he doesn’t get to have you again and that it’s his fault. No one else’s.”

I stayed very, very still, acutely aware of how his palms fit my face. They were softer than I would’ve thought for all the hard work on his hands, and warm, and damp, though that could’ve been my skin from the crying. Each breath we took, out of sync, fanned over the other, and I almost swayed forward to catch his. His thumbs pressed in under the apples of my cheeks, and his lips were in a thin, serious line, making them bloom a darker pink. No sooner had I looked away from them than I saw his gaze drop down to mine and he swallowed hard.

“Just give me a do-over if it’s bad, ok?” he said. “I’m a little out of practice.”

He ducked down, then, and my eyes closed right when his mouth slanted over mine.

His lips were soft and damp. Behind my lids, I remembered him licking them. Did he already know he was going to try to kiss me if I let him? He broke the kiss but resealed it quickly, my lower lip held gently between his as he ran his tongue along the outer curve of it. He breathed through his nose, and each slow exhale tickled my skin under where the point of his nose was gently resting. When he sucked with the slightest increase of pressure, I forced my locked up fingers and elbows to loosen so I could uncross them from in front of my chest, and I suppressed a shiver when the cool air nipped my knuckles as I set them on his hips.

This was the first man I’d kissed in over ten years who wasn’t Theo. It hit me like a freight train, then. I’d been so focused on being angry with him for leaving and annoyed at myself for being angry that the very real gravity of this moment was lost on me, and I was glad he’d taken both the pause and the time to explain it to me. I wasn’t… sad. But I was aware that this was not the same kiss I’d gotten used to over ten years, and not in a bad way, either. It was an amazing kiss. It was novel, and something — someone — to learn. He was eager, but careful; tender, yet adventurous, and I exhaled slowly when he veered off to the side, cradling my jaw as he kissed his way up the other side.
