I think some very credible people like @lucyham.bsky.social and Jeremy Walker have investigated and found strong links? E.g. see Hamilton's piece here. Drilled also looked into this. We shouldn't draw conclusions without evidence but my understanding is that yes, they have a presence.

I don't see it as an ideology, I see it as public figures filling a niche in the media. A key mechanism, as the right has become more extreme, is media figures trying to find increasingly obtuse left wing things to criticize to balance out criticisms of elected officials on the right.

Articles like this drive me insane. The amount of tokens being used is going up because they explicitly made it so that models use more tokens. This is the tech section of a globally-renown newspaper and it's an argument that's unmoored from reality or meaning.

Do you think some of it is past deprivation at work? I grew up in a poor community and have seen first-hand how it wrecks the minds of some people when for the first time, they get money or power (or both). Having it just blows them away and they start to try and hoard it out of fear of loss
