sometimes a group fractures into several smaller factions, but usually the sub-groups never attain the same level of cohesion the original social group had, because now everyone’s on guard for the next traitor, and usually the group’s charismatic leader loses power when someone fragments the group

what this can teach us is that we do not have to spend our energy engaging with these behaviors on a belief level, because they aren’t rooted in belief, even though if challenged within their social in-group they would all immediately defend their statements as being their genuine beliefs

none of this behavior is actually about “beliefs” at all, it is about transgression; if the same personalities were transplanted into the prohibition-era mafia, they would be performing the same ritual by whacking other mafiosos in front of each other or skimming off the boss’s share together

I know the temptation is to just scroll past this with a “not surprised” reaction, but you should read this if you have the emotional bandwidth to encounter horrifying slurs and violent sentiments, because there’s an important takeaway: extremism is often performed to reinforce an in-group’s bond.

Baden-Württemberg is one of the few places in Germany I have primary source knowledge of (what people there say about it, how it presents itself, etc.) and the vibes strike me as very similar to the Australian state of Victoria, which is also consistent with your description
