As we crash through the 1.5C target & head into planetary #overshoot the task before the #climate movement becomes ever clearer, we must focus our efforts on keeping fossil fuels in the ground.

I discussed how we can achieve this with @racheldonald.bsky.social on her 'Planet Critical' podcast.

Oil companies are *the bad guys* and really by this late stage it should be impossible for their senior executives to show their faces in public, because they are actively working to kill us all and salt the earth for future generations just so they can have more money than they can ever spend

Purdue University, where I work, does great research on climate but has no clear plan for decarbonizing its own campus. My friend Mike Johnston and the Purdue Climate Action Collective have advocated for a climate action plan for years. Mike and I wrote about how that effort is going.

💸The Trump admin gives the fossil fuel industry nearly *35B* a year in handouts. That money could fund food assistance for 3M families. The money to ensure everyone has what they need to thrive exists – it’s just in the wrong hands. bit.ly/47PPvZ9

I quite enjoyed a lot of the takedowns of Bill Gates' EA brain snap on climate. It is really deadassed in a number of ways.

But no-one mentioned the most important thing. He isn't *just* full of shit. He knows he is full of shit.

I can prove it: timinclimate.medium.com/even-bill-ga...
Even Bill Gates knows he is full of shit
Did you hear about that “one low-income country set out to cut emissions by banning synthetic fertilizers”?

What's the best use of rocks as a climate solution?

Is it grinding them up and spreading them on fields, or is it throwing them at billionaires? Let's go to this meeting and decide.
Are you an earth or environmental scientist with an interest in climate change mitigation? Join our upcoming scientific meeting looking at enhanced weathering as leading researchers discuss the scientific and societal challenges ahead:

"The choice we are faced with is not between "good for us" & "the end of the world," but instead how much harm we are willing to tolerate, and endure, in the years to come"

& how much harm 'we' are willing to tolerate for other people & other life forms
I wanted to offer some thoughts on the Gates climate memo that has been circulating this week. While I can't directly speak for others, I can say that my own response is one of dismay & deep frustration (and that this view is shared by many climate/Earth scientists). [1/n]
"Climate change mitigation strategies are available, cost effective, and urgently needed. From forest protection and renewables to plant-rich diets, we can still limit warming if we act boldly and quickly."
The window to act on climate is rapidly closing. Our new 2025 State of the Climate report is just out. Read the full report here: doi.org/10.1093/bios... @michaelemann.bsky.social @dwallacewells.bsky.social @georgemonbiot.bsky.social @ecowarriorss.bsky.social
The entire problem is that people would listen to a billionaire about climate instead of actual climate scientists. He made a ton of money, therefore he must be an authority on everything.
This is just mind-bendingly wrong-headed. ‘Let’s just adapt, tech will save us’ has always been a reckless strategy, but as evidence mounts that natural carbon sinks are failing it really does start to sink into a form of climate denialism.

Bill Gates saying that "Climate change is not going to wipe out humanity" and efforts to fight climate change should be shifted elsewhere is like saying nuclear war won't wipe out humanity, so we shouldn't invest efforts in arms control or diplomacy.

A billionaire who thought we shouldn't give the poor free COVID vaccines, and hung out with Epstein, wrote some weird, vague stuff about how climate change "isn't that bad" and now the media is covering that rather than a record climate fueled hurricane.

The age of oligarchy sure is exhausting.

Rather than think about desired destinations, we should instead think about climate change as an emergency - and act now to limit it as much as possible. That demands the rapid phase out of fossil fuels. If we do not do that we are cooked. 4/6 www.technosphere.earth/as-dreams-of...

1. It's fascinating to see, as you can from the responses to the post below, how many daft things people believe, to justify their continued meat eating. So let's examine a few of the common myths in the following thread. 🧵
For years, there's been a massive over-emphasis on food miles, and a massive under-emphasis on food type.
By far and away the best dietary decision you can make, for environmental, humanitarian and public health purposes, is to cut out animal products.
