@historicalbiology.bsky.social now has online Collections. One where I highlight papers that are thought-provoking or advance a field. The other is edited by our Science Communication Editor (@cooperpalaeo.bsky.social) - which brings together his SciComm series.

Our newest #ScienceCommunication editorial covers a remarkable dinosaur specimen; but one that also has a troubled history in smuggling & private collections.

I had no idea! And that looks wild…

For #FossilFriday, we have a fossil from our editor John Whitlock.

This Diplodocus specimen is Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CM) 11161. It is essentially complete, largely undeformed, and has been studied so extensively; making it an exceptionally important fossil for understanding feeding 🦕

Yeah, T&F has 5 data policies, each more progressive. SURR is 2/5, we’re aiming for Open & FAIR (5/5). SURR gets authors used to mandatory data availability statements, and gives @brooke-long-fox.bsky.social & me input for journal guidance for when HB moves to Publicly Available (3/5) & beyond
Our 1st data policy change (from ‘basic’ to get to Open & FAIR). SURR mandates a data availability statement, telling us % of papers using data, and where they’re putting them. Our data editor is writing HB data policy & guidance, which will be ready for change to ‘Publicly Available’
Glad to see the hard-copy editorial information has been updated!

We're delighted to welcome Historical Biology @historicalbiology.bsky.social as our latest (and 36th) PCI RR-friendly journal!

Full journal entry: rr.peercommunityin.org/about/pci_rr...

Complete list of PCI RR-friendly journals: rr.peercommunityin.org/about/pci_rr...
Statement of commitment: Historical Biology will automatically offer Stage 1 in-principle acceptance (IPA) to any Stage 1 RR within the journal’s disciplinary scope that receives IPA at PCI RR, and will accept without further peer review any Stage 2 RR that has been recommended by PCI RR.

Disciplinary scope: Empirical research covering evolutionary and systematic biology through time. Fields included are: descriptive and comparative anatomy, taxonomy and nomenclature, philosophy of biology, descriptions of new datasets and methods, phylogenetics, statistical analyses, palaeobiology, palaeobiogeography, evolutionary processes and patterns, molecular paleontology, extinction, and taphonomy.
4. Registered Reports - we now can handle preregistered studies! Through stages 1 & 2. We're also a PCI RR-friendly journal: rr.peercommunityin.org/.../pci_rr_f...
5. In June, peer-review in Historical Biology will become double-blind.

2. Deputy editors-in-chief. Hans Sues and Rodrigo Mueller are now DEiCs! One will take the EiC role if I'm away or have a conflict of interest.
3. Phylogenetics Editor. Rodrigo is also our first PE! He'll be authors point-of-contact for all things phylogenetics. More to come from Rodrigo!

Some exciting Historical Biology updates!
1. We've changed data policy, to 'share upon reasonable request'. This is our first step to becoming an Open & FAIR journal. Now data availability statements are mandatory: authorservices.taylorandfrancis.com/.../data.../

We will soon be changing our minimum Data Sharing Policy to ‘Share Upon Reasonable Request’ where authors agree to make data available provided this does not violate ethical concerns.

Data Availability Statements will also be mandatory. Guidance:
