I never met Tolkien, and I can't say I've seen the films. I hear they're good. I think the Lord of the Rings is first class. Wonderful. There aren't enough novelists today writing stories. Not many novels nowadays are really stories - they concentrate on character and the relationships between characters. Sad love and happy love. But a story. "Once upon a time...". It's not sophisticated enough you see, but I think there' a real place for it.

also I've successfully(?) fended off a cold by sleeping for ~12 hours (not uninterrupted, as I was awoken at 4am by, I'm confident, some critter trying to climb the downspout outside my bedroom window—how apt for October) and now I'm buying books willy-nilly but hey sometimes that's Sunday

If you like @vajra.me's THE SAINT OF BRIGHT DOORS and/or RAKESFALL, you need to have Paige Lewis's CANON on your radar. It's gonna get the Literary treatment from PRH (or maybe, at best, Literary-Genre a la CHAIN-GANG ALL-STARS) but I hope spec/weird readers will take it seriously too.

Jack gives Jenna an extremely sexist half-hour sitcom with “created by Liz Lemon” at the end of the credits. It is immediately canceled, to great outrage on the right. A conservative website called The Dogwhistle interviews Liz and she’s super mean to them, so they blame her for sabotaging Jenna.

In another life, I would often find myself banging around the office on event days, too much energy to really do anything but also not really anything to do because my brain is on the evening. I have not felt this way in a long time, but I am feeling it now! It's nostalgic! And also annoying!

This whole thread!!! when I talk about YA authors getting picked up to write romantasy, it's overwhelmingly white authors writing het romance. but that represents just a fraction of what's actually happening in the YA space.

There are real conversations to be had about thematic issues with romantasy, what publishers are buying vs what they're rejecting, YA being colonized by NA, etc. But what ends up getting the most marketing, into celebrity book clubs, and on bestsellers lists isn't representative of the whole genre.
