I am thrilled to share that the determined lilacs have been SPARED!!!

They will NOT be cut down and will NOT be sprayed with herbicide!

I was up at 5, left my contact info for the team, and kept checking.

Brutal: we got notice on Saturday for the destruction planned for tomorrow. One business day’s notice. And they only have to respond to my concern within 14 days.

To be clear, they’ve only regrown to “shrub” level yet. But at least they won’t be demoted to “razed and permanently killed,” and will continue to grow.

We are in a climate emergency. We need to protect our urban canopy. The @cityofcalgary-rss.bsky.social ‘s own Forestry Unit had designated these trees as part of the documented urban canopy, yet they were cut down 2 years ago, but started growing back. Now the City want to get them gone for good.

There are very complex things in our world and lives. It’s our duty to find or create joy, and then spread it as much as possible. It might even help people make decisions that don’t hurt others.

Let me be clear. As someone who has been professionally involved with the biodefense / biosecurity sector for nearly 20 years, and has worked on biological risk analysis for Covid-19 since early 2020, reducing one's risk of being infected is not health anxiety. It's just smart.

When you get a vaccine or a medical checkup, we expect the healthcare worker to wash their hands and wear gloves.

We should think the same about wearing masks in medical settings. Viruses can spread pre-symptomatically; masks are another effective infection control measure.
