Lauryn Hill just shared a moving tribute to the late D’Angelo:

People need reflection.

I regret not having more time with you. Your undeniable beauty and talent were not of this world, and a presence not of this world needs protection in a world that covets light and the anointing of God. You sir, moved us, stirred us, inspired and even intimidated others to action with your genius. Thank you for being a beacon of light to a generation and beyond who had no
remembrance of the legacy that preceded us. Thank you for charting the course and for making
space during a time when no similar space really existed.
You imaged a unity of strength and sensitivity in Black manhood to a generation that only saw itself as having to be one or the other. It is my earnest prayer that you are in peace, far away from selfishness, fear and/or controlling interests. Far from possessiveness, far from greed, far from manipulation, far from exploitation, far from intentionally designed chaos and that you Brother are in peace, in bliss and in eternal light and fulfillment with our Father in heaven. I Love you and I miss you. May God grant peace and shelter to your family, true friends and genuine appreciators, Brother, King. A photo of Lauryn Hill and D’Angelo, wearing black

The SF Superior Court has dismissed the police union’s lawsuit challenging SF’s landmark policy limiting police pretextual stops (i.e., traffic stops that police use as a “pretext” to detain & search people). The policy remains in effect! Know Your Rights: sfpublicdefender.org/2024/07/16/1...

Sir there were many people calling for “ceasefire” while denouncing Hamas and explicitly saying that Netanyahu was the problem & was not even supported by Israelis. They were also condemned. The lines were drawn very sharply. Please don’t remake history.
admiralmpj.bsky.social
Not true. If people were merely calling for a Ceasefire, they would have been agreed with, 100% by supporters of Israel, 80% of whom hate Nethanyahu.

But people were using Zionism as an epithet.

People wanted Israel to cease to exist.

And that as the LEAST of it.

I can’t help but think today about how many young people were savaged on social media, branded as anti-semites and abandoned by their schools for daring to call for a ceasefire. I remember saying that it was the first time I can remember that calling for ceasefire was regarded as a hostile demand.

A federal judge said "DHS, you cannot legally put this language into a grant." So what DHS did is... keep putting that language in grants — but with a new disclaimer saying it would only apply if the court order was struck down.

The judge was NOT happy.

Judge William Smith (W. Bush appointee): The Government has done "precisely what the ... [court's] Order forbids."

The case is Illinois v. FEMA

How W. E. B. Du Bois responded to government policing of "anti-American" sentiment during the 1910s:

"I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, 'We are seeking to have the Constitution of the United States thoroughly and completely enforced.' ”
Federal agents invaded even the offices of The Crisis and the National Association for the advancement of colored people and asked searching questions: " just what, after all, were our objects and activities?” I took great satisfaction in being able to sit back in my chair and answer blandly, “We are seeking to have the constitution of the United states thoroughly and completely enforced.” It took some ingenuity, even for Southerners, to make treason out of that.

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

I've done a lot of reporting in Louisiana, and talked to many defense attorneys there. Can't tell you how many times some horrible problem in that criminal justice system was addressed only because a relevant case was finally heard by a black judge from one of the "opportunity districts."
