My first book, Say Her Name: Centering Black Feminism and Black Women in Sport, came out this March with Rutgers University Press. Since then I've given talks in Boston, Urbana-Champaign, Charlotte and most recently Memphis. /1
Hardback copy of my book, Say Her Name: Centering Black Feminism and Black Women in Sport.

The cover is peach in color, with four different depictions of Black women playing various sports with different hair types.

And narrated by Ben Harper. I'm looking forward to the conversations the film will spark, especially as we move into our unit on "media and sports" /2

I've really enjoyed teaching undergrad sociology of sports this semester, and I'm looking forward to the next several weeks. Tomorrow we're watching the 2011 documentary White Wash about black surfers' struggles both on and off the board, and their role in the larger fight for racial equality. /1

Rest well D'Angelo, thank you for the light you gave. 🌸🌸

What D’Angelo said Black Messiah means. It came out at the end of 2014 and it was so needed.
Article (Nolan Feeney; TIME) excerpt reads: “Black Messiah is a hell of a name for an album. It can be misunderstood. Many will think it's about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I'm calling myself a Black Messiah. For me, the title is about all of us. It's about the world. It's about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah.

It's about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and in every place where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen, D'Angelo writes in a statement about the album It's not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them. Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are), but calling this album Black Messiah creates a landscape there these songs can live to the fullest. Black Messiah is not one man. It's a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader.”

“D’Angelo’s First Album in 14 Years Is Finally Here, and It’s Surprisingly Timely” via TIME.

Our anger is ours, and as Audre Lorde notes, it has its uses. Since we are continuously marked as angry, hiding it has no utility.

Thanks Reni Eddo-Lodge and Audre Lorde for teaching us the uses of anger 🌸🌸🌸

"Not displaying anger wasn’t going to stop me being labelled as angry, so I thought: fuck it. I decided to speak my mind. The more politically assertive I became, the more men shouted at me."

While there are many books that deal with public attitudes, behaviours, and incidences concerning race and racism (frontstage), there are few studies on the attitudes whites display among friends, family, and other whites in private settings (backstage)." /2

1)You may remember the articles criticizing liberal students for their hesitancy to make friends with conservative students—alleging that they were less open-minded than their conservative counterparts.

"There will be no re-writing of history and no mis-remembering on Oct 14th. We do not have to acquiesce and cower because the State says so. Proclamations are not the people. Let them remember their dead. Let them mourn their martyrs. /1

The government wants us to recognize Charlie Kirk today. But, today is George Floyd’s 52nd birthday. And, the genocide in Palestine continues after two years.

We have our own people to mourn.

"In this paper, I explain how public discourse around racism can hinder understanding of racist processes, becoming its own mechanism of racism. The general attribution of Flint's water crisis as a “clear case” of environmental racism, adopted by some state actors, serves as a key example." 📍

I know it is beside the point because this administration simply wants resegregation but conferences for Black professional associations have always been open to everyone. Typically, the started as a response to white exclusion, and did not replicate that.

Very bad: OSU unilaterally cancelled the registration of grad students attending the joint conference of the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. And OSU won't fund recruiting at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.

A mom in Houston reported her 15-year-old son with autism missing. She spent 6 days terrified, searching for him. The whole time, Houston police knew exactly where he was since they helped ICE place him in a refugee facility.

This is beyond cruel.

The Regime's goal is to grind everyone down. Plain & simple. Our goal is to refuse this by taking turns to fight where and how we can. When one group needs to bow out, then another group needs to step in and so on. We don't all have to do everything. We can all do something though. Stay in the fight
