There's a difference between "intelligent" (potential) and "smart" (ability). You can be incredibly intelligent (i.e. Weiss attending Columbia, Vance attending Yale) but still be incredibly stupid because you either don't know or refuse to learn certain things, especially things you don't like.

I mean, I don't think it was structurally that different.

Letter/long-distance call to establish basics (I'm in town x-to-y, we should meet). Call from the hotel, or a payphone to establish details (let's meet at x time at y place). You just had to do a little thinking ahead and plan to be on time.
