The Hawai'ian habitat-based system of land management is ahupua'a. Territory most often begins at the ridgetop and follows the watershed down to the ocean. Cohesive groups in defined watersheds have the right and responsibility to husband the land for ecosystem maintenance and food production.

The ahupua'a is ideal for permaculture farming on islands, because it connects the health of the habitat with the well-being of the human group, and prevents human groups from ruining their own habitat and moving on to destroy the next.

Biologists define habitat zones for land management. We should use those zones to vote on all laws that affect the habitat the voter lives in. This will motivate us to vote for our local ecology and values.

Everyone who lives on this planet should be able to vote on anything that affects their habitat, from their backyard to the whole world. Our culture, food systems, and ecology need habitat-based democracy.
