Though just a note, if you plan to copy + paste from ChatGPT, make sure the visualization you create matches the font of the software you were supposed to use.

My philosophy is AI can be a tool, and there are ways to use it in class (with disclosure requirements), but it can't replace the intellectual component of the work. Student make mistakes or need to take shortcuts some weeks, so I don't auto fail them if they're honest

My morning is busy with sending emails to cracking down on ChatGPT use in my Digital History courses. My count is 15/72 students across 2 sections that I'm mostly or absolutely certain used it against course policy.

I offer 1 chance for amnesty to redo work as late submissions. 4 confessions so far

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

A few minutes ago in the House:

- Speaker Mike Johnson officially cancels votes next week, extending the House recess through a fourth week

- House Republicans block Democrats from passing a bill to pay the troops during the shutdown, ensuring they will miss paychecks next week
House Press Gallery: During today's pro forma session, the Clerk read a message from the Speaker designating Tuesday, October 14 through Sunday, October 19 as a district work period. Punchbowl's Briana Reilly: House gaveled in and out of its pro forma just now w/o recognizing Rep Elfreth, who was seeking to UC a mil pay bill from Rep Sykes.

Elfreth told reporters after that House Dems stand “ready and willing to take” up standalone legislation to pay troops.

Censorship is so 1984. Read for your rights.

Today kicks off #BannedBooksWeek, and this year's theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights.

Militarized federal agents raided a Chicago apartment complex and pulled men, women, and children from their homes and into U-haul vans, separating the children from their parents.

Some people were pulled from their bed naked and terrified in the dead of night.

Trump to generals: "America is under invasion from within. We're under invasion from within. No different than a foreign enemy, but more difficult in any ways because they don't wear uniforms. At least when they're wearing a uniform you can take them out."

Hegseth's words seem especially chilling in light of his whitewashing of the Wounded Knee Massacre as a heroic "battle" only a few days ago. The message would seem to be that the Trump Administration is willing to forgive any atrocity US troops may commit as an "earnest mistake."

Hegseth: "You should not pay for an earnest mistake for your entire career. That's why today, at my direction, we're making changes to the retention of adverse information on personnel records."

Hakeem Jeffries still refuses to endorse the Democratic Nominee for NYC mayor but has plenty of praise for Eric Adams who, left the party, openly supports Trump, & cut a deal with Trump to disappear the DOJ’s bribery & corruption charges against him. Can’t imagine why the Dem Party has 26% approval🤔
