I can now show off the version of Black Mass that's for this month's Shadowland Lancaster event poster. I'm really proud of how it came together, especially the vine and web framing. Overall my best work to date.

This was the last full drawing on paper I did, which was 10 years ago this month. You can see I was already developing themes that you can now see throughout my current work (shadowy body, moon, etc).

A dhampir (Prudence) surrounded by an out-of-focus crowd of undead. She wears a white dress, akin to a vampire bride, and a white veil in contrast with her dark hair. She spins on the spot, smiling with one had at her side and the other raised, both conjuring bright green magic that winds around her arms. Above her raised hand rests a skull formed out of her magic.

A gnome (Helfi), ginger and dressed in brown and blue. They wear a nice coat, a turtleneck underneath, and have around their waist two belts, one holding a spellbook. Their outfit is accented with gold: their prosthesis, on their shoulders, in the form of buckles, and along the rim of their boots. One hand is raised, in a white work glove, while the other, their prosthetic, is tucked into their pocket.

A girl (Mimi) flies through the sky on top of a machine, hanging onto a pole with one foot propped on it's round body, the screen of it displaying a wide smile. A small black cat sits on the visor of the machine. Mimi looks out with a wide smile, holding an oversize wrench in her off hand, and wears a green puffer jacket lined with fur and working clothes- rough trousers, boots, an apron and gloves. Three other machines follow after her at different distances. Where she's looking out to her left, the sky stretches out with a green-blue hue and white clouds, hills just visible at the bottom of the image.

The Maw:

The Doombringer:
4/7 The goliath suit of armor of a long dead king reanimated to avenge his fallen kingdom. The armor has mongolian inspired features with a long, red trail of hair from the top of the helmet. There's a crown of aquamarine fire around the full iron faced helmet. The souls of his fallen people bind the armor together represented by ghostly hands spreading out from the cloak and in between the armor pieces. In his right hand is a massive great axe made of ghostly white energy. The armor steps through a battlefield of enemies felled by his hand, looking like they've been sucked of their life energy. Behind the Doombringer is a collapsing tower also filled with ghostly energy, and two hands are reaching towards him beside the tower.

I think it does, but it’s angry. My mobility is angry to get out. But it’s not happened yet. I do a certain amount of physical therapy. I did a whole bunch of it at Cedars-Sinai, and I got very close, I think, to walking. That was tantalizing. For insurance reasons, I had to withdraw. And I have a visiting physical therapist now, but I can only really do exercises from my bed, which is pretty pathetic. It’s not going to get me walking, I don’t believe.

And most of us don't take that opportunity to find joy for granted, so we take the opportunities when we can knowing and accepting it very well may cost us to some degree. Ultimately joy helps to keep us going. Well, that and spite.

Through what? Living? What do you expect? Me to do nothing ever other than sit and be miserable? It may come as a shock to you but chronically ill and disabled folks need joy too.
