Anyway here’s a goat from an Amish dairy.

Ok this is the first time I’ve been tempted to work for OpenAI….

It was only a matter of time before the big players went after the chatbot erotica market. Will be fascinating to see if they can wrestle it away from character AI, replika, grok (lol), etc.

I mean that’s a better situation to be in.

I feel like if we’d done Stoppard it would’ve been that godawful film so I’m glad that didn’t happen.

I couldn’t have fewer opinions about what 16-18 year olds like/relate to. But I remember
- Who’s afraid of Virginia Wolfe
- A Clockwork Orange
- Macbeth
as the three things I liked in high school which is probably telling of me at 40 and also me at 17 but in quite different ways.

Let's be positive, what are 5 books you'd assign for a high school English class to get the kids on board with literature?

Great Gatsby
The Natural
Forever War
Some of Edgar Allan Poe’s poems + short stories
For a play: pair Death of a Salesman and Fences

The Remains of the Day
Fatelessness
A Bend in the River
The Life & Times of Michael K
The Handmaid's Tale

... since there is plenty of value in identifying subsets of the problem space for which better solutions are available, rather than complaining too much about the fact that these solutions aren't universal (which was anyways a big ask!).

Thankfully that's not the current approach! People (shout-out to them!) are working on automatic diffentiation of pre-existing low-level numerical code.

github.com/EnzymeAD/Enz...

Typically targets an intermediate representation that's universally used (incl Fortran)

Yeah. I wonder how much of it is just that people who specialize in building and implementing models at scale have no overlap with the people who have experience with autodiff
danpsimpson.bsky.social
Yeah that shit is cool. I wonder how much it’s used irl
danpsimpson.bsky.social
It’s definitely possible - emulators were developed in the field (GPs back in the day, but obviously modern models work better)! But I’d suspect those were already in JAX or torch (because truly who’s going to code that shit from scratch 🤣)
danpsimpson.bsky.social
There are also going to be very real memory concerns with these models as is and autodiff is famously memory hungry (and orchestrating it through Python is unlikely to help things)
danpsimpson.bsky.social
I’m well out of the loop at this point, but last I looked these forward models were more like gigantic MPI’d models that run on cray-style supercomputers. Typically fully different numerical and programming techniques are needed to make those sorts of things GPU compatible.

I mean, would _you_ want to re-implement the weather models so they support AD 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think what makes this different, usage-wise, from a lot of other GP regressions is that because it’s naturally online you can’t just think of it as a big multivariate Gaussian! (That said, 1D GPs are the least interesting GPs)

This weekend, I have been doing a bit of reading about Gaussian Process State Space Models (GP-SSMs). Aside from being interesting on the modelling and inference sides, they are a remarkably good exercise for what it really means to write down a joint distribution.

A blessing, I guess, of the chronological timeline is that I can see that something is happening but I truly have no idea what. And tbh I’m ok with that.
