#journorequest - looking to talk to people in Ireland who live at home with their parents due to being unable to find accommodation of their own. DM today if any thoughts. RTs appreciated. #housingcrisis #housing

Pat Kenny telling Catherine Connolly that barristers have ways of getting around the cab-rank rule is so interesting. I imagine Pat does know some barristers like that.

One example of the bad state of Irish journalism is Humphreys constantly saying she brought in the hot meals scheme when it was Regina Doherty

Fine, Humphreys expanded it, but she didn't "bring it in". And yet she doesn't get picked up on it.
daithig.bsky.social
I'll say one thing for the 1:1 RTE interview just now, you're getting more from Humphreys about herself than every other interview.

The Indo hates MDH's "policies"!

When Steen was campaigning we were told that difference of views should be welcomed. But that was only about LGBT+ rights, Trans people, or abortion.

Not people like Paul Murphy getting a not guilty verdict or having a different opinion on the EU.

So just to clear up this week we've learned the following things are threats to democracy:

- Pleading not guilty in court
- The Bar's professional ethical standards
- Criticising the media
- Voting No on a referendum
- Paul Murphy

Political discourse in this country is a complete mess right now

Alan Kelly can vote for whoever he wants, but I find it a tad dissapointing he's voting for someone who thinks the Gender Recognition Act, one of the most progressive pieces of legislation that Labour delivered in Government, needs to be "looked at".
daithig.bsky.social
Is Alan Kelly trapped in an X-Files style episode where he keeps showing up at Tipp FM to say he isn't voting for Connolly?

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.
"
Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

The party of law and order hates when Judges and juries disagree with them and also think once you're convicted and serve your sentence, you shouldn't be able to get a job.

In some respects I prefer this to the last election and Pete Casey endlessly attacking Travellers, but it's still an incredibly long and tedious campaign.

Especially when people are asked about policies they'll have no say in
daithig.bsky.social
One of the oddest things about this election are people pretending that Heather Humphreys isn't a conservative.

It's something which has served FF and FG here for decades, they're the "centre", but it's still nonsense.
daithig.bsky.social
It's always "Labour/SocDems must compromise with the centre" and when they move even slightly more left as here it's apparently not allowed.

And Humphreys is very much a conservative and Cahill is not much of a "liberal leftie" either.
daithig.bsky.social
I don't want to misrepresent her but there's a tweet which says she'll lead overseas trade missions to support Irish business abroad.
daithig.bsky.social
If Heather Humphreys wants to make the role of President a more "trade oriented" role , I hope she's pressed more on the OTB bill and if she's lead delegations to those areas.
daithig.bsky.social
Heather Humphreys' went from "she doesn't have the energy to run for General Election again" to running for President and saying she'll lead overseas trade trips. Wherever she found this new found energy, I need to know her secret.

The NYT headliner's perspective: there are two sides to this story. The side of the loco rightwing fabulists and reality. They're both legitimate perspectives. This isn't journalism.

A niche topic but the new F3 bus route amazes me. Why would someone in McKee Ave in Finglas have to go around Finglas West and South to get to the city. It's the only bus route that goes down the road.
A map of the F3 bus route in Finglas.

Even Fine Gael would acknowledge that Humphreys didn't create the Hot Meals scheme. She inherited it and expanded it.

It's not exactly the biggest success for a two time Minister tbh.

Where is the Irish Times view on 3D printing houses

I think Connolly is a more interesting character than Humphreys but still don't think it's an explanation.

I remember an early Coyne piece about Humphreys which never mentioned the fact that Humphreys had initially ruled herself out of running, which I found odd.
thomascreamer.bsky.social
On the Inside Politics podcast, Ellen Coyne explained the disproportionate media stories about Catherine Connolly compared to Heather Humphreys as a case of Connolly just being a more "interesting" candidate with Humphreys not doing much that is worthy of comment?

Really? Seems a bit weak tbh.
