7/ Democrats need to stand for something right now. And what need, to vote for this budget, is pretty simple and reasonable:

Don't cut people's health care just to pay for a billionaire tax cut.

Don't fund Trump's growing authoritarianism without checks on his corruption.

Behind a paywall - but the headline is enough to know what a disaster this is.

Trump’s erasure of women from US foreign policy hasn’t just impacted the US. It’s made other countries reluctant to include or discuss women in their foreign and sometimes domestic policies too foreignpolicy.com/2025/10/13/t...
Trump Erases Women From Foreign Policy
The White House has overturned the decades-old bipartisan policy consensus that female empowerment serves U.S. interests.

For nonprofits that don't have a specific mission to help immigrants or the marginalized, but have staff wanting urgently for the organization to speak out, SOMEHOW, consider adapting this sign from the Mennonites & displaying it in your lobby or on your front lawn. Easy to find/order online:
In Spanish, English and Arabic, these words: "No matter where you are from, we're glad you're our neighbor."

Good news via UN:
Humanitarian scaleup in Gaza is underway & "today brought some real progress." For 1st time since March, cooking gas entered the Strip. More tents for displaced families, frozen meat, fresh fruit, flour & medicines also got in. UN & partners distributed 1000s of hot meals & bread

On Reddit now.
Hillsboro is outside of Portland. Airport there that's easier to get ICE in and out of.
"I passed by the Hillsboro airport at 6:20 this morning and saw several large vehicles with about 40 armed military personnel in gear standing around on the sidewalk near the Nike hanger."

My Afghan colleague tried to come to the USA when the Taliban took over. We filed all the paperwork for that to happen. She also applied to Australia, where she also has connections, & ended up there instead. I'm so glad, as the USA is now deporting our Afghan allies. Gift article: wapo.st/3W4mySQ
America saved him from the Taliban. Trump wants to send him back.
He supported America’s war, escaped Afghanistan and started a family in the U.S. Then ICE arrested him. If he is deported, he expects the Taliban to kill him.

If you’re going to commit heinous acts, please, for the love of God, clearly state your political beliefs so we can begin the finger-pointing as soon as possible.

Used iMovie to increase the volume on a sound file, TWICE, of an interview in Spanish, so it would automatically get transcribed on YouTube, so my native Spanish speaker colleague could then revise it & get an ACCURATE transcription done in less than an hour.
Imagine what I could do with a budget.

Military spouses are encouraged to pursue volunteerism to adjust to relocations & career disruptions. But while organizations benefit from a steady stream of unpaid, skilled labor, the payoff for spouses is far less certain.
Terrific article & opinion piece:

The Cost of Spouse Volunteerism
Military spouses are often encouraged to pursue volunteerism as a way to stay professionally relevant during relocations and career disruptions.

You don't have to judge Columbus by the standards of today. His tenure as governor of Hispaniola was so horrific that he was dragged back to Spain in chains to answer for his many crimes.

Plus he never set foot on any land that would ever be a part of the United States of America.

I don’t understand why we need a “Columbus Day” when this country celebrates incompetent white men failing up and taking what isn’t theirs all year round.

I did not participate in the Portland Naked Bike Ride that went by the ICE facility yesterday. & as you see, even the Unipiper didn't get totally nekkid. It was cold!
But this is what's ACTUALLY happening in PDX, contrary to what the current President of the USA is saying.
Photo from BikePortland.
A sea of people on bicycles, many scantily clad, most wearing bike helmets, one man on a unicycle and also wearing a Darth Vader mask and playing bagpipes, ride in a tightly packed formation down a street.

somehow the defenses of Bari Weiss always find space to list all of her self-promotional achievements and then run out of column length before they can cite any examples of her doing worth-a-damn journalism or writing or publishing. must be a coincidence

Do you see where this is headed?
Tweet from Jordan Weissmann: “Asked for an example of a group that had funded a violent protest, Trump named ActBlue and Indivisible, which I think pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the goals here.”
Below is a screenshot of an article excerpt detailing that neither George Soros nor Open Society Foundations fund protests, and noting that the White House named liberal groups like ActBlue and Indivisible in relation to violent incidents.
